3 Alarm Fire 222 N. Elm St. Torrington, CT 3/20/13
Posted by: hoss - 03-20-2013, 08:33 PM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - No Replies

Came across the radio like hell's bells, with dispatch reporting TEN  911 calls reporting flames coming out of the occupied two story brick apartment building on N. Elm St. During my 40 minute travel time the guys from T-Town got a handle on it pretty quick and the majority of the third alarm units (mutual aid) were returned to station.

  Flash suggestions?
Posted by: Aaronw - 03-18-2013, 11:08 PM - Forum: Photography Discussion - Replies (2)

I'd like to get a decent flash for my camera. Obviously fire related stuff, but also useful for small close ups (plastic models and such) and general photography.

I have a Canon T1i.

Although it is a bit more than I was hoping to spend, I am leaning towards a Canon 430 EXII Speedlight. The Canon 270 EX II or 320 EX are more in the price range I was hoping for, but they looks quite a bit less capable than the 430. The additional $100 or so seems worth while. The 580 seems to be overkill for my needs with many features apparently not even available on my camera. I'm not even sure the 430 is fully functional on the T1i.

Open to other suggestions.

Also wondering what peoples thoughts are on used flash units from B&H? I was reluctant to buy a body used, but a flash seems less prone to issues, and would easily put the 430 within the budget I was hoping to stay under.

I really know very little about flash units, so any help is appreciated.

I searched to see if there was a thread dedicated to this family of apparatus and did not find one.

Here are some to kick it off.

  Wilmington, DE 1954 Mack B-75

I took a few moments the other day to snap a few shots of my department's antique before it left for the St. Paddy's Day parade.  This 1954 Mack B-75 750/300 was placed into service at Engine 1.  It saw action at many engine companies in Wilmington as a front line and reserve piece through the 1970's and into the early 80's.  It spent several years under a tarp at the fireboat station until 2000 when several members of the department worked to restore it for the career department's 80th anniversary in 2001.  The engine is pretty much all original and is still owne by the department.

  3 Fires in Portland 3-14 & 3-15 2013
Posted by: Guest - 03-17-2013, 12:05 PM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - Replies (8)

Rather late posting these. Had a computer problem.

The first of 3 fires, (Don't they seem to come in threes?) Smile was at 18:49 at 2621 SE 174th Ave. Since Station 31 is at 1927 SE 174th, they were way ahead of the other companies. I expected to see nothing, but they saved a little fire on the first floor for me.

Only time for that one shot before they hit it again.

At 2300 or so, I woke up to my pager with a box for an apartment fire not many blocks away, but it turned out to be food on the stove by the time I was halfway there.

The 3rd fire of the night was around 0415, March 15. Dispatch received several calls for a fire around 85th Ave. and Brooklyn St. The fire was at 87th and Brooklyn and the police reported a house, maybe two houses fully involved. It turned out to be a rear porch heavily involved. When Engine 11 arrived they stretched a pre-connected 2-1/2" line and knocked it down fast.

Brockton, MA 3rd Alarm Vacant House 3/14/2013
Posted by: Guest - 03-17-2013, 09:26 AM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - Replies (15)

Brockton FAO received calls reporting a vacant house fire in the downtown are of the city. Box 1255 was transmitted sending Squad A, Engines 5 & 4, Ladder 1 and Car 56. As I live less than a mile from the scene I took it in and arrived with the 1st due trucks. Heavy fire was showing on arrival and a W/F was requested bringing Tower 1 as the w/f company and Engine 2 as RIT. A 2nd Alarm was transmitted shortly after that and Enigine 7 took in the fire. Flames had already spread to the upper floors and due to structural deficiencies from a previous fire a defensive operation was taken. A special call was sent for 3 engines for relay pumping due to very poor water pressure in the area. Brockton Engine 3 with Stoughton and Whitman engines responded. Crews battled for about 2 hours to bring the fire under control.

2010 ArrowXT PUC crosslays on my Engine
Posted by: B95MACKFIRE - 03-13-2013, 11:48 AM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (11)

This is the crosslays on our 2010 Arrow XT PUC  [Port Chester New York, Westchester County] Engine 58. As of our build this is /was the only one at the time [ my design ] and it works very well. It's only for repacking the hose. One firefighter stands on each side of the pulled out tray 3/4 slide out and repacks then when complete pull the pin and slides it back in place. No lifting of heavy hose trays
