Richmond VA Fire Station No. 17 - Truckman - 11-29-2012

On a cold afternoon of November 7, 2012, the Mayor and Officials of the City of Richmond along with the members of the Fire and Emergency Services Department dedicated new Fire Station Number 17. It houses Quint 17, Engine 17, Brush Unit 17 and Battalion Chief 3. This site is on the eastern end of Canoe Run Park, located at 2211 Semmes Avenue.

The new three-bay, drive through single story facility, has 11,351 square feet of space and includes separate bunk rooms for the members and separate shower and toilet facilities, dayroom, kitchen and eating area, and offices. Also included are sleeping quarters for the battalion chief and station officer. Others features are a watch room, exercise room, study room, lockers for personal items and separate lockers for turn out gear. The new station will also house a cascade (breathing equipment) unit. Also the apparatus floor has air purification system above each bay, front and aft.

The station was built for LEED Gold certification, as it will reduce water use by 35%; improve energy efficiency by 24%; 75% construction waste recycled; contain low-emitting building materials; use controlled lighting and thermal comfort systems; water efficient landscaping and building recycling collection and storage areas.

It has all the latest features for a new building, including a sprinkler system for the entire station. Also, the apparatus floor doors have fast action four-folding inward doors. There are four wall mounted reels for water, 1-1/2 inch line, and four air hose reels, are mounted two on each side wall, front and aft. This is the first station to have the new digital readout for runs. Digital Station Alerting readouts are mounted in various locations of the station. At this time several more stations have them installed and all stations should be completed by the end of 2012.

The old Fire Station 17, located at 2901 Bainbridge Avenue was built and occupied after July 1, 1915, when Engine Co. No. 17 went into service.

I was waiting until the members to get everything straight and in order before I shot the interiors.
