Woburn Ma car fire K June 26,2007 - hoss - 07-02-2007 Another payment book up in smoke <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> - also anyone else notice a slight increase in the # of MV fires in the past couple of years? If so any theroys as to why? Also anyone run into any fireswith these cars/trucks running on veggie oil or the like? Any special problems with them? Just some random questions - <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/idea.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Woburn Ma car fire K June 26,2007 - Kevin Lackey - 07-04-2007 Ditto Ed, Ive really captured some great shots of car fires in the past 6 months. Its really a fire you have to be close, quick and good at in order to grab the perfect shot for sure Woburn Ma car fire K June 26,2007 - Guest - 07-04-2007 Nice shot! Did anyone else hear? Im probably way late but Homeland Security sent out a press release to all the FDs, to watch out on car fires, car bombers are now a factor. Whether they've been or this is new, I just now found out. Woburn Ma car fire K June 26,2007 - ilfirebuff - 07-05-2007 Very Nice Shot. Woburn Ma car fire K June 26,2007 - AS702 - 07-09-2007 For a Lt., he sure is missing a lot of PPE... He's upwind, and I'd be willing to say he's seen more than one. Last car fire I put out, I didn't even have a piece of fire apparatus, just my extinguisher off the ambulance and my uniform. Plus, every car fire I've ever shot was from about the same distance, but with absolutely nothing more than my camera, are you going to criticize me, a person who isn't even a firefighter for being too close without PPE? Tell me I should go out, buy my own bunker gear and SCBA if I'm going to be that close? It pisses me off to no end when people criticize the PPE on car fires, and I'm making a public statement that any more of it in this thread, or any other for that matter, will not be tolerated. Woburn Ma car fire K June 26,2007 - JDeSistoIV - 07-09-2007 Ed I don't think it was all that much criticism as much as it was concern. With the materials that cars are made with now (magnesium something or other) and all the hybrids that are out there you never know what can happen. There is a video out there on You tube of a firefighter putting a hose inside the side window and the steering wheels metal (that magnesium stuff) exploded and launched him 15 feet. At the Mass Fire Academy when they teach about car fires the first thing that they talk about is NEVER EVER say " It's only a car fire" just my .02 on this and I am not being critical just don't want to see a brother get injured [quote name='edburke' post='127407' date='Jul 9 2007, 06:09 ']Why? I told him as well. I cant repeat what his response was on here. He hasnt hit water on a magnesium transmission or engine block yet. 35 years on the job. Also we run 2 man engines with the exception of engine-3, and they were coming back from a run. Not sure it would have mattered though. I went to a rollover accident couple years ago driving the engine and when we got there, it was fully involved with 2 teenagers inside. I only had on a coat and helmet with gloves when I took the line. It was a ford explorer and when I hit it, you all know what magnesium looks like when water is applied. The first thing i thought of, was "oh my god, I cant believe i just burned my face off at a car fire". The fire and sparks must have been 20 feet in the air. I lucked out with a sun burn but NEVER AGAIN. I dont care if Aerosmith is in the car, I will take the extra 30 seconds and put a scba, pants and a hood on. This fire also is why we went from a 50 foot trash line 1 3/4 to 75ft of 1 3/4 for car fires. Just my .03 cents. Woburn Ma car fire K June 26,2007 - lynnjake13 - 07-10-2007 Everyone makes a very valid point about "turnout or not to turnout" @ a cah fire. The bottom line is this... Old habits die hard....ESPECIALLY on the EAST COAST....ESPECIALLY with a guy with more time on the job than most have been alive...Do we really NEED to state the obvious here?!?....Yeah, he didnt have the right **** on! WE KNOW...YOU GO TELL THE SENIOR JAKE ON YOUR JOB THAT STILL IS A WORKHORSE AFTER 35YEARS...."I'LL TAKE THE NOB...YOU GO PUT THE APPROPRIATE GEAR ON!" Thats well within his powers. I'm not throwing rocks at him, that's his choice. Stay safe, Spita. My comment was directed to STOP this discussion, not start it rolling. At least no one told me to go and buy SCBA. I am reminding people now, that this is a buff board, not a firefighting board, and the next person to criticize a firefighter's decisions will buy themselves a suspension. Apparently some didn't realize who posted the comment about it pissing them off, or didn't realize I was serious when I said I wasn't going to tolerate it.
