Are those yellow tools JACKHAMMERS? Awesome, talk about RESCUE!

Los Angeles Fire Dept - Russell - 06-11-2007

What is the crew compliment of a LAFD USAR company?

Thanks in advance.

Los Angeles Fire Dept - Chasselber1 - 06-11-2007

Keith, yea those are Jackhammers, they are hydraulic powered and if you look in pic #163 you can see the preconnected reel for the hydraulic line. I BELIEVE that all USAR companies nation wide have to have a set of "HEAVY-DUTY" hydraulic powered tools.

Some of the USAR's are cross staffed by the Engine Co and others are manned 247

I believe USAR 3 Downtown and USAR 27 Hollywood are cross staffed with USAR 88 Sherman Oaks and USAR 5 LAX manned 24/7

In talking with the FF that was with the engine, he told me that the station was in line to get a "Hand-me-down" truck. Replacing the late 1980's Seagrave TDA will most likely be a Simon/LTI. He did not know which rig that they were getting, but was sure it was going to be an LTI.

Seems like many companies (busy or not) are getting a new engine or a slightly used hand me down. Oh well heard that the LAFD put in some more orders for Seagraves recently.

the other day while driving northbound on highway 151 outside of madison wisconsin there was a convoy of brand new Pierce LAFD pumper trucks heading south. unsure if they were heading for a train depot to get shipped out or if they were driving the whole way.

in the past i have seen lafd pumpers on the back of faltbeds too. i live about 2 hrs south of the Pierce plant. unfortunately in the past we have stopped there and you cannot tour the plant unless you have a truck in production whereas the Seagrave plant in wisconsin will give tours and rides in new apparatus they have on site.

I've heard those rumors about 4's and 17's switching quarters and it won't be the first time the LAFD did something like that didn't 7's and 81's? just do something like that recentley?

From what I have read of the proposed 5 yr plan that former Chief Bamattre put together last fall. When new FS4 is done, Sq4 is to move to FS17. Also Division1 will move from 3's to 4's. Then EMS 1 will move into 3's.

Last time I looked into the Fire Commission's minutes, they did adopt the plan just before Bamattre left. So, I guess it is up to the mayor to fund the plan now.

On the FS7 / FS81 note, Originally, the new 81's was to be FS7. Then someone decided to renumber it for 81's. I haven't heard a clear explanation for it though. When NEW 81's opened, their old quarters became FS7. That is until they build a new house for 7's. According to the plan, a new FS7 should be in service in FY '11-'12.

Some members of my department toured the Pierce plant a while back and we didn't have a rig being built at the time. I was always told that they offered plant tours. Maybe they have changed their policy for various reasons.

I heard Homeland Security was the reason for ending the tours
