Hi D. I can't say with 100% certainty that it was a Century however I do know that Truck 36 had one until 1988 when they received their E\-One 110 footer with a crew cab.I'm unaware of the exact dispositon of the Truck but most likely it was gotten rid of quickly.

Are you familiar with Retired Chief Jack Connor's? He really is the ultimate resource on the rigs diposition as he was in chaarge of the shops at the time and he is heavily involved with the Chicago Fire Museum and the Fire Buffs of Illinois.



I ran into him a few weeks ago at Engine 106's 100th anniversary.

So, was Tower 5 an emergency delivery like E92 & E23?

Tower 5 was also an emergency purchase. It was on display at FDIC before CFD took delivery of it. At the time of the show, the truck had polished aluminum wheels, which were swapped out w/ steel before going in service.

I've always wondered why Chicago used only steel wheels instead of the aluminum ones.

For tower 5 I think that origanly had a pump in it also which was removed and a cabinet was placed in its spot.

A therory on Chicago and chrome wheels. The fleet has probably 300 or so trucks in the fleet and when it comes time to change tires a large fleet probably swaps wheels from one rig to another and puts tires on wheels. If you have 1 truck out of 300 that has chrome wheels, you can't change wheels & tires without having red/chrome wheels on the same rig. When yu only have a couple of rigs, whhels probably stay with the rig all of its life. Besides FDNY, CFD and others like standardization.

This is the fourth oldest active Firestation in Chicago and was built in 1898 by Cicero Township and was annexed into Chicago in 1904. Firepost!

I read someplace withing the last couple months that Chicago was finally going to go with full bunker gear instead of the 3/4 boots, have they finally done that? And why did it take them so long to switch over?

Okay, don't get me wrong I like tradition just like the next guy, and I remember fighting fires in the old 3/4 boots (1979-1984) but it just seemed like a department as modern as Chicago would have had their guys in the better protection of full bunker gear. That was why I was wondering.

Tower Ladder 5 also had a pump and tank at FDIC when displayed as a demo, both were removed and replaced with compartments prior to CFD taking delivery
