It was in front of the FAO Schwartz Teddy Bear. I believe that a member here, thecellardweller has a copy of it......perhaps he may even scan it in at some point.

Ed,

Any idea what EMS is going to look at for a chassis now that C-4500 is history?

I've heard that International-Navistar will be picking up the chasis from GMC/Chevy.........

Boston EMS - Guest - 07-12-2009

When did the C4500 cab/chassis get cut?

Boston EMS - nealcraig - 07-12-2009

About 3 weeks ago GM announced they were ceasing production. Really has put a kink in ambulance orders

Boston EMS - edburke - 07-12-2009

Not sure what direction they're gonna go. The current contract with Braun is also at an end, and they are compiling an Ambulance Committee to decide what the new trucks will be.

Ok here is a question. I was reading a 1st responder newspaper the other day (NE edition) and they an ad from a local Ambulance dealer with a picture of Bosotn EMS rigs and it read something to the effect that they had delivered 70+ units between like 01 and 08. The question is it seems like a lot of rigs what is the life span of a rig in BEMS? Granted I know Bosotn is very busy but How many rigs are running at any given time how many reserve units? What happen to the rig after theere usefulness is done?

They may have delivered 70 units built to BEMS Specs, but I'd say that we've only received about 35-40 in the timespan of 2003-2009. All of the trucks are still in service, with the exception of a few which have had the boxes remounted onto new chassis with a couple of other exceptions. They have held up better than any truck I've worked in. "At any given time" is a misleading question. There are 17 BLS and 5 ALS as minimum staffing on the day and evening shifts, with 11 BLS and 3 ALS on the night shift. Usually, there are 2 more BLS on the day/evening shift and 1 BLS on the night shift above minimum. I don't know how many spares there are, because of the remount issue, but I'd estimate 10-12. I know one of the 2003's was given to BPD Special Operations, and modified for the entry team to use when the situation doesn't require the Bear, and one other had the box removed and installed in the Training Department as a simulator after an accident totaled the chassis.

Still baffles me with a city the size of Boston that BEMS manages to work with the staffing levels, crews certainly do work hard.

I know we went into BEMS when we looked for our new ambulance. They were more than helpful and really helped us make our decision as to chassis etc. The BEMS staff went through one of their new trucks with us showing us what to look for and what to change. Well, we didn't go with their supplier and went to horton, again. Now, we are looking for a new truck next year and Excellance has returned to the area. They seem to be well built. I would like to see a Frazer because of the hydraulic generator running the electronics but that won't happen either. The Excellance was out here last week and seemed to fair well over the current horton. Our issue will be the 4500 not being made anymore.
