Not only a really tricky shot but also a very heavily traveled street with the NYPD 19th PCT next door and your back to the Russian Embasy. once again Fdny fire houses - Guest - 12-30-2006
Here's a shot on a cloudy day - shadows weren't an issue. I am wondering if maybe some admin use this house, or if there are also apartments there? Also, I have always wondered this, beings I am from the midwest and don't know much about this issue, but a lot of your houses are 3 story or more. Can any FDNY member or anyone who knows tell me what is beyond the 2nd floor. I am going to at least assume the sleeping and living quarters are on the second floor as in most multi story firehouses, and I am wrong, please correct me, and if I am correct, again, what is the 3rd (or more) floors used for. Thanks and stay safe. Chris once again Fdny fire houses - Guest - 12-30-2006
Just curious, but what are the 6 floors used for? Thanks and stay safe. Chris
Most firehouses that are 2 stories have a kitchen on the apparatus floor with bunk room and officers offices on second floor. Firehouses more than 2 stories can have any number of set ups, most bunk rooms and officer offices are on the second and some have a kitchen on the second floor as well. The third floors in some may have a kitchen or a lounge. There is no real commonality to NYC firehouses except the apparatus are on the first floor. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hysterical.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fireman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> A majority of the 2 story firehouses are less than 50 years old and also have a plain square box look to it. While the older houses have elabarate cornice work, window and door arches and designs built in with different colored bricks. 99% of the firehouses belong to the city so there won't be any appartments on upper floors. once again Fdny fire houses - Guest - 12-30-2006 E-39 & L-16's firehouse was also home to FD Headqaurters, fire instruction school and the Manhattan telegraph communications office. once again Fdny fire houses - Guest - 12-30-2006 Don't forget about the marine guys in Manhattan!
