If you're going to go to the expense of buying a rig this large, with tandem rear axles, why put a dinky little 75' ladder on it, why not go with a 100'??? <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Doh' />
Pinealls County,FL is notorious for doing that.

TEXAS RIGS - karl4700 - 08-30-2009

Libertyville IL just did that too. From what I understand their theory was they only needed 75's but wanted 500 gallons of water.

I don't know? But I've got a friend who works on Quint 2. I'll call him later today and ask him.

Ok I got the answer. The reason for the tandem rear axles is because of the larger water tank.

Quint 2

That looks familiar...maybe because I see a fairly identical rig a few times every week! Only difference I see is the cab length.

*Edit* I missed a BIG difference, Tayor is a Dash, mine is a Lance

Was the Taylor quint a former Pierce Demo as well?

You can get a 75' single-axle quint from Pierce with a 500 gallon tank. You can also get a 100' or 105' tandem-axle rearmount quint from Pierce with a 500 gallon tank. It just seems like a waste of a big truck to only have a 75' ladder.

Thats what my department is thinking as well with our '98 Lance tandem axle 75'. We are in the beginning stages of looking for a replacement, Pierce single axle 75 quint. The current quint is just too big for its capabilities.

TEXAS RIGS - Guest - 08-30-2009

Pittsburgh's new quints are single axle, 75 ft., and have 470 Water, 30 Foam.

A tandem rear axle is better for brake life.

I won't argue that point, but you give up a lot of maneuverability versus the same rig with a single axle. However, the point I was trying to make is that if you are going to buy a rig that is that large, go with the larger stick. Our State Fire Academy bought an E\-One Hurricane with tandem axles.....and an 80' ladder! It doesn't even have a pump or tank! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Banghead' /> I just don't get it.
I don't know if anyone in Texas would have any pictures or info on this truck. The Pierce Dealer, Martin Apparatus has our old 1961 Mack C-85 and converted it into a BBQ Pit Wagon. I looking to find what Fire Department owned the truck before Martin Apparatus bought it. Also if there are any photo's of the Mack while in service. When we sold it back in 1984, we know it went to Texas and still had the Indian Head on the doors. Any info would be appreciated as we will be celebrating our 75th Anniversary next year and need to update our apparatus history.
I took these the other day with my cell as I was there for a truck repair. Luckily its was sitting outside.

That's the truck. I'm trying to find out what Fire Department in Texas ran this truck after we sold it.
