Interesting looking "home-made" tanker that once served the Cleveland, N.Y. FD. Photo of a photo that belonged to the Cleveland FD.

On Friday 11/2, myself along with six other members of the New Hamburg Fire District, Town of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY, were mobilized along with countless FDs from upstate New York to the two counties that (along with Brooklyn and Queens) make up Long Island, Nassau and Suffolk. As many of you may know, Long Island was badly damaged in the Hurri-Storm Sandy. My crew was sent to Long Beach, a barrier island that consist of a city of 32,000 people in 3.9 sq mi. I took grab shots with my phone when I could and am sharing a few. I saw dozens of rigs along the trip.

First up is a shot at the Nassau County Public Safety Center which served as an initial staging area. Left to right:

Roosevelt engine 63-11

Rombout engine 62-11

Pleasant Valley rescue 56-55

Village of Fishkill rescue engine 42-13

Finally, my ride, New Hamburg Tower Ladder 53-45, 2009 Sutphen SPH100.

Consider donating to good causes from Sandy. Long Beach was nearly wiped off the map, cars and boats tossed around the city like toys and nearly every structure uninhabitable, no power, food or gas on the horizon. Thanks for looking.

Good stuff Danger, its truly amazing how quickly and well NY'ers from through out the state band together during times like this. A couple FD's from Saratoga, Albany, & Rensselaer County took your spot I think, they got down there today. It's killing me that I cant be down there but we are on mandatory 12 hour shift at State OEM.

Thanks. We were relieved by Clifton Park with a TL and Vischer's Ferry with a rescue among some other Albany area units. Also forgot to mention, LBFD lost nearly the entire fleet, save a reserve engine. The Seagrave 'Scope that was in FAJ, Ferrara RM TL, at least two Pierce engines and a few ambulances and chief cars. Last I heard the Spirit of Louisiana was coming as well as a demo RM straight stick and engine from VA.

Yes, the 'Spirit of Louisiana' is coming back to NY. It is scheduled to go to City of Long Beach

John, when you listed the LBFD rigs "lost" above, are they total losses or just OOS for mechanical? Hoping that the rigs are salvageable. I grew up about 20 minutes from LB (actually due north by a couple of miles just across the bay separating them from the mainland) and my mom still lives there, and there is a lot of damage in her area (and still no power). Thanks to you and the other brothers/sisters for coming down to help, take care and stay safe!!!
