The "new" Medic 11 was sitting outside next to the Vienna Wagon and a White Medic unit with no markings, a demo perhaps?

Engine 402-Bravo. I will be sad to see this rig go. Short and tight wheelbase - and a Roto-Ray! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Fairfax County is getting ONE Tractor Drawn Aerial. No one knows who will get it yet...

Fairfax County VA - chief60 - 06-15-2013

Wow! Why the change? My guess is 29 getting it.

The purchase of TDA for Fairfax County has been sparked by the hiring of the new fire chief, hired away from neighboring Montgomery County, MD (a sense of deja-vu for anybody who remembers the early 1980's).

My own two cents on the subject:  Imagine a sample from each decade (1960's, 1970's and early 1980's) of the tractor-drawn aerials purchased by Fairfax County (anywhere for that matter):  all they have done is gotten bigger.  Any maneuverability gained by having a tiller will be lost in the overall length of the vehicle because, knowing Fairfax County well enough (28+ years on the job), it will have to be re-invented from the ground up and have to carry more stuff than any volunteer-owned TDA between North Carolina and Long Island NY (yes, this includes Pennsylvania).  Unlike DC proper, parts of Old Town Alexandria and Arlington County, there are few places in the Realm of Fairfax County that demand a TDA.  I would be willing to pit any of our seasoned, regular, rear-mount aerial drivers and their rig against a prototype of the TDA to be delivered.  (I'm having a vision of a tandem rear axle tractor a la Pacific Northwest, monster ladder w/an immense tip load and betting it would go to the 4th Battalion.  Stirpot )

I plan on seeing some Fairfax County people next week, I will try to separate the wheat from the chaff and then off to OC for MSFA parade.

I figured the Chief from across the river had something to do with it. My guess for Tyson,s Corner was just that. I haven't been there in 20 years but I do go by on the beltway when I go back to visit relatives occasionally ( I am from across the river also, started at Cabin John 28 years ago). I figured the amount of development might be the only area that could use it. Maybe they will surprise everyone and get a DC style Tiller that is nice and compact!!

I see that Fairfax has not been too impressed with the Mid Mounts either.I wonder if they will start buying Tillers from now on out and what model will they be.

I'm guessing something like Baltimore just got except with a Velocity cab.....yuck!

The mid-mounts were purchased after a deputy fire chief made a strong push for them.  I can truly attest that they were the largest fire trucks that I have ever seen that didn't bend in the middle.  The rear-end kick out led to many accidents and the return to purchasing rear-mount tower ladders.  Before retirement, I had it on good authority would not see an after-life in the reserve fleet and that they would be traded in for new apparatus when their front line service life was up which should be in 3-5 more years.

Actually the Pierce MM Platform is smaller in OAL than rear mounts of that vintage. Wrecks are one issue but FXCO is having the same issues as the department they purchased them after with the Command Zone electronics on the aerial.

Nothing better than hearing an old Detroit going down the road. Today while in the lot at work the "Rocket" came out of the north app shop and headed down West Ox. What a great sound

One of the best sounds ever!

Two new rear-mount tower ladders on Velocity cabs are getting close to delivery from Pierce for FS24 and FS30.

Not sure if this will be the same in Fairfax but all the TDA's in Montgomery have Rescue Tools on them.  So not sure if they will go the same route or not.  Not a big fan of cross services (Truck/Rescue) but I will say it does work in Montgomery.
