Way back in the day (1963-1977), AFD Station 33 was an engine company that ran out of Station 32 (Sandy Springs Fire District). Company 32 & 33 were disbanded when Fulton County started thier own Department.

I understand E36 will be moving to Fulton 23 eventually. What other plans does Atl. have for adding companies in the Fulton Co. through annexation. I hear the whole county fire department will be gone in about 24 months. Any truth to all of this??

Its only speculation right now. The remaining Fulton County Stations on the southside should be broken down like this.

Stations 11, 13, 19, & 23 should become apart of the City of Atlanta Fire Department. **Station 11 used to be Atlanta Company 34 prior to Fulton County Fire forming in 1977**

City of Chattahoochee Hills Country (Dumbest City name ever) should absorb the areas of Fulton Stations 9 & 17 and part of 15's area.

City of Palmetto took the rest of 15's area including the firehouse that the County used to use.

City of South Fulton should absorb Fulton Stations 1, 3, 5 & 7

Station 21 is now the City of Fairburn Fire Department Station #1

Pretty soon Fulton County Fire Department will be a thing of the past.

I assume the blacked out areas are portions of Fulton County already covered by a different municipal fire department. What happens to North Fulton County in terms of fire protection?

And finally, are the "new" start-up departments absorbing the personnel, or some of them atleast, with the formation of their own departments?

Thanks.

Based on that map, the large black area is the Cities of Atlanta, East Point, College Park and Hapeville. The black area in the northern part is the Cities of Roswell and Alpharetta. The little black area in the southern part is the City of Union City.

In the northern section, the areas marked 2, 4, 6, and 22 are now the City of Sandy Springs. Those marked 10. 14, and 18 are now the City of Milton. 8, 12, and 20 will soon become the City of John's Creek. Once John's Creek goes in service, there will be no unincorporated areas of Fulton County in the northern section.

On the southside, once the annexations by Atlanta, Union City, Fairburn, College Park, East Point, and Palmetto are complete, and the Cities of South Fulton and Chattahoochee Hills Country incorporate and put their FD's in place, Fulton County Fire will disappear.

Any idea what happened to make these areas that suddenly wanted to incorporate into their cities? Seems like something political had t occur to make such an "uprising" happen throughout the entire area.

Although the reasons are political, the desire to incorporate is far from sudden. The Sandy Springs area has attempted to become a city since the mid-1980's, maybe even longer, but the State would not allow it until two years ago. That change opened the door for the other new cities to follow suit. The major part of Fulton County's tax revenue came from the northside and much of that tax money now goes to the new cities. This left Fulton County with more services than it could afford to provide. The County would no longer be able to provide city-type services such as fire and police protection. The existing cities in the county saw this as a last chance to annex county land before it became another city and began to do so. This process is still underway, so the final story has yet to be written.

Thanks for the additonal information Dave. I suppose law enforcement is now provided by the new cities as well?

For clarification, how does the coverage areas of one department running into Atlanta work? I got confused about Atlanta stations going Fulton County and FUlton county running assignmetns in Atlanta and now Sandy Spring, etc. Anyway to clarify it all? Ha ha.

Jim, thanks for the pic!

I had written a huge response to several posts in this thread, but I got booted offline, and lost it. It's too late to respond again, so I'll just say:

Thank you to all of the Dekalb Companies who took time out of their day on Saturday to show respect for FAO Thomas Hinkle as the funeral processed through your county. (Yep that was me in the tiller truck). Your effort and support meant a lot to us.

Goodnight,

Be Careful,

Tom
