The Swab box was removed and placed onto this ALF in the early 90's. Anybody have some more details on this conversion? [Image: attachment.php?thumbnail=92152] DanEvans photos
Yes, this ALF was a "former" pumper from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, and was either assigned to National or Dulles, not sure which.....hope that helps.....I know Mike Sanders has the "more" detailed 4-1-1 on this rig !

The Greater Manassas VRS ALF squad is one of my all time favorite northern Virginia rehabs.

It started life as a 1971 ALF engine 1500/500 that ran from Washington Airport.

Greater Manassas had this 1973 Chevrolet/Reading squad that needed upgraded. The decision was made to take the Reading box and join it to the ALF engine.

So Squad 1 became a 1971 ALF with a 1973 Reading box. Work on this conversion was completed in 1991 by Keplinger Repair Service in Winchester.

When the Greater Manassas VRS took delivery of their new 1996 Spartan/American heavy squad, the ALF went up for sale.

Ultimately in 1998 the ALF was sold to the Reynolds Store VFD in Frederick County, Virginia where it ran as Squad 20.

Approximately 2 years ago, Squad 20 was sold. The Reading box was sold for scrap and the ALF cab was used as a parts truck for another local ALF restoration.

Mike, I am 100% in agreement with you on the ALF Rescue Squad 1. Without a doubt on of the most distinctive looking rigs ever.

Nice rig. KME is definately becoming a major player. How well are they holding up in general?

Prince William County VA - SrFireOfficial - 06-21-2012

They haven't even gone in service yet.

The KME's are two inches longer over and two inches shorter in the wheel base. Right now 18 and 20

I remember when Manassas brought that rig to Philomont to look over as a possible replacement to the very aging Unit 8 at the time. Loved that rig and when it was for sale out in Frederick, VA I had that itch to pounce on it but knew better. :]
