I was working Christmas Eve, around 1 am we were all, ummm, studying up in the bunkroom when we heard a VERY LOUD bang. The housewatchman hits three bells (meaning everyone goes) and gets on the intercom and announces "I think a truck just hit the firehouse". We go running outside to see a van that had plowed into the dumpster that you see parked behind the NYPD Command vehicle, and had pushed the dumpster into the back of the command vehicle doing ALOT of damage to the rear of it. Behind the large green dumpster were two smaller dumpsters that literally got launched into the firehouse, knocking off a considerable amount of brick from the side of the building. Me, being the first one out the door saw the van and immediately thought that the driver was probably dead, being how smashed up the van was. We saw some movement as we were approaching and found the driver, dazed, but concious and trying to start the van to take off again. After asking him if he was alright (he had a good amount of blood gushing from his face) he tried explaining to us (more like slurring) that he was just trying to go to work. I told him that he wasn't going anywhere and to get out of the van. Needless to say, he spent Christmas day in the hospital, then jail. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> You can't make this stuff up! once again Fdny fire houses - Guest - 02-07-2007 You're right - you can't make up things like that. Here's another pic of the IC vehicle, this time from the sidewalk, showing the dumpsters more clearly. Three years later and they're still there! Should they be painted NYPD blue? Any members have damage to their POV? Amazingly, no one parked in those spots that night, the only one with damage was the drunks van and the PD Command Van. once again Fdny fire houses - Guest - 02-07-2007 Marc, Could you post the stain glass window from your house on here?? I saw it once when I stopped in but did not have a camera. The Train "CB Express" Looks GREAT!!! once again Fdny fire houses - Marc - 02-08-2007 John, Here's the only picture that i have of the stained glass logo in our kitchen. I just so happened to have my camera with me one night while at work. A couple of us younger guys were screwing around with the "Table cloth" and the candles that night at chow. The officer to the left with the light blue shirt on is my Captain, Frank Keane, who recently passed away from a heart attack while off duty. Our Battalion has a hockey team that the Captain played on. Today they retired his jersey. I'll include a pic of that also. The guy to the extreme right with the shaved head is Prob. Fireman Justin Bales, L-27 who is currently serving in the USMC over in Iraq. In the background in the light blue shirt is the "Famous" Lt. Mike Wilbur. I took this photo. once again Fdny fire houses - Marc - 02-08-2007 Here's a pic that was taken today at The Ice Hutch in Mt. Vernon, NY with my camera. It is actually the former home of Engine Co. 32. Engine Co. 6 was originally on Liberty St just west of the current home of 10/10 and on the north side and was displaced when the WTC was built. Engine 6 was the only relocated company that was allowed to remain in service and the original company 32 in quarters was disbanded. I think the COD or commisioner at the time had a beef with 32s commanding officer...or so the story goes. once again Fdny fire houses - Guest - 02-15-2007
Just curious, but what are the 6 floors used for? Any FDNY members that can answer this for me? I am wondering if maybe some admin use this house, or if there are also apartments there? Also, I have always wondered this, beings I am from the midwest and don't know much about this issue, but a lot of your houses are 3 story or more. Can any FDNY member or anyone who knows tell me what is beyond the 2nd floor. I am going to at least assume the sleeping and living quarters are on the second floor as in most multi story firehouses, and I am wrong, please correct me, and if I am correct, again, what is the 3rd (or more) floors used for. Thanks and stay safe. Chris
Any old timers would remember the boxing ring on the 3rd floor. During the 1980s or early 90s the job in their infinite wisdom told someone somewhere we didn't need the space and allowed the 19th Pct. next door to expand into the upstairs during a major renovation. Too bad for the brothers at 39-16. As for the third and 4th floors..etc. You have to remember when built many of these houses were essentially these mens homes as they only got a few days off a month and a few hours each day to return home for meals. (Didn't really want to eat in what amounted to a stable anyway.) For the most part the Kitchens were built at the rear in what formerly was the rear yard or stables...sometimes a small sitting room as well. The second floor is usually pretty standard accross the job. The Officers quarters is at the front and the bunkroom for the men and toliet/showers are also located perhaps with a washing machine for the linens. On the 3rd one will typically find the locker room and perhaps the formal sitting room or a gym if it isn't located in the cellar. Now in some the 1st floor didn't allow for a Kitchen to be built, so the kitchen was placed on the 3rd floor right next to the lockers and some are still found like that today. I hope that helps answer your query. once again Fdny fire houses - anesti - 03-31-2007 how about we revive this thread from the bourough of fire brooklyn eng 224 |
