I remember hearing (or reading) a while back that there was a time when the local population in inner city areas were unscrewing the speaker cones while the rigs were on scene - the metal screen was added to prevent that. I don't remember where this info came from, or if it's correct, but hey, it's what I got.

Sweet thanks, it does make sense. Gandy's will take anything if its not locked or bolted down. Gandy is our term in Kansas City for Skell.

Stay Safe,

Rick

The Spencer Abbey rig is now used as a spare for the Spencer, MA fire department. The truck is in great shape, pumps great, and is used as a front line piece if one of their other three engines goes out of service. Great shot, too.

Frank,

The job only ordered two of these rigs. The other went to 163 Truck in Queens. This rig (14) eventually tipped over while operating at a job, pinning two firemen underneath. Firemen, cops, civilians, and even some skells ran over and literally lifted the rig off the two firemen. Don't know how extensive their injuries were, but i know they survived. I believe 163's ALF/LTI was eventually reassigned to 14 and soon after, that was disposed of too.

Wow. I never heard about that. my favorite was the FDNY Sutphen aerial tower with the Lions on it. I forget what company it was from.

imo it was a good choice from NYC to purchase Seagrave & Mack rigs, because the Sutphen and ALF´s look really ugly

Fire Departments do not buy trucks for the look (Most Fd's Don't) you buy a truck for what it can do for you at a fire. The Sutphen's worked very well they are the first 100' (95') T/L's that FDNY had. I would think with the new bucket style you may see them around again in the FDNY.

Doubt it, I dont think the bucket on the sutphen will go to ground level unless extended about 60feet. (no good for taxpayer fires)
