Relics - Guest - 09-08-2011
Originally City of Groton, Connecticut...1965 Ward LaFrance/Hi-Ranger 75 footer. Shot from 1977. When replaced by Groton with a Sutphen tower, it was in service at Electric Boat FD in Groton. Last time I saw it was at Electric Boat at Quonset Point. Relics - bcfd424 - 10-26-2011 An old American LaFrance service truck. # 4699 Relics - bcfd424 - 10-26-2011 A couple of weeks ago I was in the Charleston, SC area and went looking for my department's old engine that we sold to a well drilling company in that area. I tracked it down through Google and Bing.com maps. The owner of the company said the truck had been in the building since he bought it and that was the summer of 2006. I also found several other old fire trucks outside. x Boger City FD, NC Engine 43 1976 Chevrolet C70 / Grumman / Howe 1000 / 500 # 15090-HO Relics - bcfd424 - 10-26-2011 This truck was sitting behind the building. Montmorenci FD, Aiken County, SC Engine 15-1 1979 GMC / Pierce ? / ? E-0363 Relics - bcfd424 - 10-26-2011 Also sitting out back. Cullasaja Gorge FD, NC Engine 1652 1969 Ford / Howe ? / ? # 12856 Relics - bcfd424 - 10-26-2011 The last truck that was out back was a sad sight indeed. This truck was the only truck to survive a fire in the fire station in the late 1970's I believe. I could not get any information off this truck. Number 3 FD, Shelby, NC Engine Chevrolet / ? Relics - bcfd424 - 10-26-2011 And here is the rest of it.
This fire was covered by FireHouse mag in an early 1984 issue; the station blaze occurred 9/28/1983. The article was written by a reporter with the Shelby,NC Daily Star. My copy of this article states: the engine saved was on the main level of the building, the 5 pieces lost were all on the basement level. The saved engine was a 1974 model. E-1 assisted the dept. by loaning a rig, and outfitting a stock tanker for quick delivery. I think these heavy-duty GMC/Chevy chassis are very attractive, esp. powered by a Detroit Diesel.
