Don't get me wrong these are great Engine's very nicely designed. I am amazed more how many fire departments don't put any focus in to low hose bed height especially with 500 gallons. Our first concern with our new Engine was how low could the hose bed go with 750. As I say and teach Engines must be "Attack Ready". We choose Pierce's L Shaped new york tank. We were still able to get the Hurst tool in the rear compartment with reels.

Rick, did Topeka used to have a total of 6 true ladder companies (as in real ladder trucks?!) but decided they could get by with only 2, so they decided to go with 4 city service ladder trucks and save the manpower as well?

Spartan Luvern Lear II, I believe this one was the 2002 model. It was the only one with Da Booster on the bumper. Originally delivered with a Big Whelen Executor Siren on the drivers side bumper recessed. That is why the siren speaker has tread plate around it. I remember them pulling in the Academy with the Bell Function Ringing, They were poking fun at the Executor, but who wouldn't. Engine 2 was the only rig with Executor, it did not prove to be popular and the department returned to standard electronic sirens for the next few orders. They have added a second electronic siren speaker. The Q siren is a recent addition. Topeka did not use mechanical sirens for the better part of thirty-five years. When Aerial 5 was delivered in 2007 with a Q siren. All of the other companies began to request them.

NOTHING beats a true Federal Q mechanical siren! Those Whelen Executor sirens are crapola, for sure. Go check 'em out on Youtube if you're not familiar with them.

This week I had to go to Fort Leavenworth to do some training for them and managed to get some shots of their apparatus. Unfortunately the sun was not being to cooperative for me. The Fort runs out of 2 stations with 12-13 people on duty running 2 engine, the ladder and a rescue or rapid attack rig as needed. Thaks to Captain Ken Skaggs and crew for pulling the rigs out.

Great Photos Dennis, Wonder where the Federal Q Siren went. The Q was on the bumper this past summer.

What is the ground ladder compliment for Topeka's Truck 3?
I understand the city service truck concept. Indianapolis F.D. used city service trucks, and Louisville F.D. used quads. But both Indy and Lou-a-vul ran apparatus that had a full compliment of ground ladders.
I'm assuming that Topeka's service trucks run mostly residential areas that would not require the longer ground ladders. I would even take into consideration that the 24' ladder could be used of off the engine company. But that back compartment looks a little short on room for ground ladders. Do you have a pic of the rear ladder compartment open? It must work well for Topeka since 4 out of 6 trucks are set up that way. Thank You in advance.
