S 365, 1976
In 1976 Truck Co. 3 received one of American LaFrance’s newly introduced Century Series tillered trucks. This rig was a one of a kind (in DC): the trailer had clear running boards. Contrast that with Truck 1’s 1977 cabinnetted model Century directly behind it in the photo.

S 366, 1978
1978 marked the end of a 40-year era with Pirsch aerials when the Department received this piece. S 366 had a Sutphen tractor and a 100’ Pirsch 4-section ladder. It was our last open-bed truck and last Pirsch. The Shops added a facing jumpseat on the driver’s side to keep the sixth man off the running boards.

This unique rig was synonymous with Truck Co. 11, being quartered there until the mid-1990s when it went into reserve.
Both images are T-11 at New Hampshire Ave and Ingraham St. NW, c. 1990.

The Sutphen/ Pirsch went into reserve status in 1993 when T-11 received their LTI tiller. This image was taken at the Training Academy. Apparently Truck 17 had it that day.

the only pierces they bought were the 4 engines they had. i think engines 16,4, and 12, and i dont know the last. a buddy of mine told me that they hated those things, they didnt hold up well, and the seagraves were just overall better.
thank god at least one fire department isnt buying freaking pierces!

S 367, 1979
Truck Co. 1 received this new ALF Century Series 4-section 100’ ladder in 1979. The half fender in front denotes the flaring out of the cab behind the driver. As with the 1972 Pirsch trailer, the enclosed compartments opened on their own while in transit and eventually the doors were removed.

S 368 - 370, 1980
Three more American LaFrance models were delivered in 1980, but spent half a year in the Shops and at service centers (untorqued bolts and suspect welds) before they were put in service. S 368 through 370 went to Truck Companies 13, 2, and 16 respectively. Photograph is T-13 at 4th and Morse St. NE, October, 1983.

When this photo was taken of T-14 on a Fifth Battalion fireground in June 1986, the nuisance compartment doors had been removed from the trailer. I'm not sure of the identity of this apparatus - the trailer appears to be one of the 1980 ALF's with an older tractor.
