i know rite where you mean with the fdny rigs. last time i was there he had quite a fleet of engines,ladders,ems, esu, and nypd vehicles. he also had some phila stuff too if this is same place.but it sounds like it is.it is rite on rt 309

Yep, thats the place, there were a couple of old planes mixed in with the rest.
The ARFF rig was there but I took these pics about 3 years ago and haven't been down that way since. I posted a pic of the ARFF truck either in the ARFF post of the FWD post don't recall which. I also have some pics posted on my site.

Quartite is a strange place, very popular with the snow bird crowd. I was wondering if this "junk yard" might be owned by a snow bird as it kind of looked abandoned but also looked like someone had been recently working on stuff too.
I'd love to get my hands on a 48-50 Ford pumper like the one sitting next to the Pirsch TDA.

Well its not quite a relic but I found this behind a station in Northern California, this one does seem to have a happier story to it than most, the department is debating whether to rehab this engine and continue to use it or sell it and use the money to help run the department.

Trust me when I say this folks........You dont want the old R4, not unless money is falling out of various orifices of your body. It is so beyond a "just some paint & bondo" restoration its not even funny. It would take a FULL body-off frame restoration. I dont know what the condition is of the mechanicals, but let me tell you, the body is SHOT SHOT SHOT.
I am by no means a professional mechanic or body person, but I do have limited knowledge of both fields, and I own an antique- so I can take somewhat of a swag here and say that I bet it would cost at LEAST $75,000 (*and thats just to start) to get the old girl roadworthy!
I would guess you would have to do no less than:
-Lift the cab and body
-Pull the driveline
-Check frame rails and all cab/body mounts for cracks/damage, repair as necessary/sandblast & paint
-Overhaul engine/tranny/drive screws & steer axle as necessary
-Cab interior would need a COMPLETE refurb
-Body would have to be gone over by someone intimately familiar with Saulsbury construction- many, many broken welds, cracks, "waves" in sheet metal. Missing doors, trim pieces, etc.
-Entire body & cab would need repaint
-Check all wheels for condition- I have a feeling new wheels may be needed, plus rubber all the way around
Like the old saying goes (and it is true in this case): "If you have to ask how much, you cant afford it."

When did FDNY get rid of this truck? From looking at FDNYtrucks.com, I see R4 has been through an HME/Saulsbury and now has an E\-One/Saulsbury. Did the Mack serve as a reserve piece for a while, or did they get rid of her as soon as the new HME was delivered? Nonetheless, what an awesome find! I'd love to see someone with enough money restore this old rig!

I found this critter recently in Marietta, GA. It's sitting alongside Rt.120 just off I-75. As you can see, it's being used as a billboard for a gutter cleaning company. I went into the office to find out if they had any information. The nice girl working there told me she new nothing of it and there was nobody there who would know. I went outside and opened the door to look and didn't see anything right away. The nice girl from inside quickly came out to tell me that the owner of the truck wouldn't want me getting into or looking around it. Thus, ended my search. Gee, I was even going to get a serial number on it! So, all I know is that it's a Ford C by American LaFrance. It has a 3-section ladder.

There is a landscaping company here in Mass. that has done this to several rigs as well. A Maxim F, 2 Mack CF's and a Mack C.

Too bad, but it does show one interesting feature of the Hahn. Note the color of the frame. Hahn painted their frames and undercarriages to match the finish color.
I don't know if this used to be common practice, but I know most new apparatus I've seen are black underneath.

The Landscaper is Weiss located in Peabody Ma. Orginal he had Old Malden Ma E1 a 1960's Mack C and the cab to the old Salem Ma Ladder one a 1970's Maxim F (both thses have been scraped for various reasons). He now has two old Nahant Ma 1979 (I think) Mack CF as sanders. Some where I have pics of the first two mentioned. I believe the old Malden truck was converted by another company to use as a sander and was then sold to Weiss.

Rode this rig a lot back in 91-92. One night as I walked in to the firehouse the brothers had the mini ram for the Hurst tool hooked up and was pushing the bumper out. Seems they tagged a car while responding. All in all minor damage, just neat to watch the FIREHOUSE BODY SHOP at work!
The sad part is I can count 2 members that rode this rig to their last calls that I knew. Also the Company Captain was badly burned in a steam explosion. (This story was used for the scene in LADDER 49. The movie was really going to be based on an FDNY unit but with 9-11 and the City they kind of backed off and went with BCFD)
