Nice work as usual, Mike! Say, do you have anything from Mathews County?

[quote name='mnsand' post='150141' date='Sep 21 2007, 21:46 ']My thanks to Chris Fox for tipping me off about this Fire Department and the fact that they have a new delivery.

I love visiting those "Behind the Fence" type of departments where we typically do not see the apparatus.

The Charlottesville-Albermarle Airport is just off of Route 29 and was a bigger airport than I anticipated. Smaller jets, smaller planes, helicopters, etc. I was surprised how busy the airport was when I visited.

The guys there were extremely nice and accomodating. I basically was on my way to a work event, so I dropped by without contacting anyone beforehand. I went to the check in area, found a airport policeman, explained to him I was looking for the fire department, and he made all of the arrangements. Ten minutes later I was shown the apparatus and able to get photographs.

The airport is Station 95 in Albermarle County/Charlottesville, and members of the fire department serve in other capacities - mainly police officers and maintenance workers. They often have three crash trucks staffed for a call. They will go off the airport grounds when needed. A new Albermarle Station is being built just down the road from the airport.

Airport appartus consists of just crash trucks. If an engine company or EMS unit is needed, units come from Albermarle County.

The airports newest arrival is "Phoenix 95", a 2007 Oshkosh. It replaced an older Oshkosh that is now at the Bridgewater, Virginia airport. Might have to track that one down.

One change for those who like rosters - the airport is station "9" (not 95 as mentioned above).

At the risk of sounding like Jerry ( <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />) , I always wait to see if you've added to this thread. Great photos as always.

I found it very ironic that my girlfriend (originally from Warrenton) got me contact info for WTC-FD just a few days ago. Looks like I'll be able to save myself from the troubles of making all those phone calls! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

Mike,

I also made a "work" trip recently to this very same area and shot this old brush truck that used to belong to Iron Gate. It was still partially lettered as the Town of Iron Gate, but had a seal in the middle of the door that says "Public Works". It was sitting on the main street in Iron Gate in someone's front yard. On a return trip to the area a few weeks ago, it wasn't there though.

I also drove through Fincastle myself, however there was no one to be found, and pressed for time, I didn't try to hunt around for anyone. However, sitting in the rear parking lot of the Fincastle VFD was this Command Trailer, which is utilized at large incidents, and likely towed to incident scenes by one of Fincastle's rigs.

And most recently, I spotted this old rig in a parking lot next to a rock quarry on Rte 58 somewhere between Martinsville and Danville. It's lettered for Union Cross Fire Dept, No 228. Any ideas, anyone ??

Don't think it's a Virgina rig.

Chris,

The guys at Iron Gate told me their old Attack truck was now owned by Public Works. I photographed that truck years ago. Info I have on it is a 1976 Chevrolet/Pierce 250/250.

Thanks for the post.

There is a Union Cross in NC, south of Kernersville, just off 311 between Winston-Salem & High Point NC, this would put this department only about 60 miles from 58 between Danville & Martinsville.

Don't know anyone at Union Cross, didn't find a website for them.

[quote name='mnsand' post='150162' date='Sep 22 2007, 01:29 ']Here is what I really wanted at Gretna. This is an unusual rescue squad and I knew by the paint scheme that it had come from the Elsmere, Delaware VFD.

Rescue 228

1970 Imperial/Providence

Imperial serial number 1-507

18' squad body

Originally owned by Elsmere, DE. Sold to Pillow, PA. Gretna received in June of 2000.

When looking through the bay door windows, I thought it was a Hahn. Strong resemblence.

Gretna plans on selling this truck in the near future.

Yes Mike, this is a Imperial (Imposter) Elsmere had the cab designed to look like the other two Hahn pumpers.

I have no idea why the rescue was not a Hahn.

Nice photo.

Was this Richmond "City", Virginia or Richmond "County", Virginia??

Neither are related. About 60 miles or so apart.

If the buggy whip antenna is any indication, then it had to be Richmond County as they operated on low band vhf radio.

Richmond City operated on high band vhf radio at 154.130 back then, so probably would had an antenna of about 12 inches in the roof.

Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 10-06-2007

On pages 17 and 18 of this thread, I posted the apparatus from Sharon, Virginia. During my visit, one pumper was not at the station - it was having mechanical work completed. This past week I traveled to West Virginia and was going right by the exit to Sharon. A quick call to a contact I made at Sharon allowed me to photograph the missing KenWorth at Sharon.

Engine 80 is a 1985 KenWorth/FMC 1250/1000. It has FMC serial number 4474. The KW was rehabed during the mid to late 1990's, I believe by Slagles. It carries a 2100 gallon drop tank.

Virginia had a variety of fire apparatus with these type of KenWorth cabs - I believe they are referred to as "Hustlers". I have several photographs in my collection of these KW's built by FMC and Oren. In addition, Warrenton ran an unusual ladder truck with this KW cab.

The department had this on hand so I took it - it shows the older version of the KW engine.
