Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - Guest - 06-03-2007
I arrived in Marion, Virginia during the early evening with rain and thunderstorms. The following day, I had the quick opportunity to drop by the Marion Life Saving Crew (Rescue Squad) in Smyth County. It was recommended to me to stop by that station because of an interesting older ambulance the department still owns. First up is that old ambulance, Unit 41. The department members tell me that this ambulance was purchased with "H and H green stamps". Some of our more "seasoned" firepic members will have to fill us in on that program Unit 41 1965 Dodge Power Wagon 100/Franklin Body Equipment Corp. (Brooklyn, NY) Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA
Brooklyn Phil replies: You got S&H green stamps for buying something (usually everything except what the girl on the corner was selling). Then you could redeem your stamps for something else. Here's the skinny: http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mgreenstamps.html Phil, Bklyn. In Marion do they still hve the Young Crusader Snorkle? Would really be worth a picture. Thanks <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_lalala.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
No, the Young snorkel is gone. My records show it was sold in 2003 and then was seen on ebay in 2006. I had the opportunity to tour the Marion FD but get no photos - some of our firepics members have some great photos from Marion. They are now a black over red FD, with two Freightliner engine/tankers, two Emergency One ladder trucks (quints), a brush, and a Ford cascade unit. Here is the photo of the Young Snorkel. 1969 Young 75' ex- Nanuet, NewYork s/n 69-285 Photo by William Schilling/Mike Sanders collection Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-03-2007
Brooklyn Phil replies: You got S&H green stamps for buying something (usually everything except what the girl on the corner was selling). Marion citizens must have really rallied around the rescue squad to be able to purchase that Dodge ambulance. Good seeing you yesterday. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - Truckman - 06-04-2007 Mike, Great photos as usual! Keep them coming. Phil, if you are lucky, you can get Green Stamps from the girls on da corner!! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - Mark V. Carr - 06-04-2007 Great shots Mike! I too like the mix of old and new. Mark Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - fighttheenemy666 - 06-13-2007 Some more photos from some recent trips.... Staunton, Virginia 1962 Seagrave that was photographed at the recent muster held in Westminster, Maryland. Anyone have the exact specs on this one (gpm/gwt, s/n, etc.)? Thanks, Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - fighttheenemy666 - 06-13-2007 Loudoun County, Virginia has four new tankers - this is Purcellville's Tanker 2, a 2006 International 7600/2007 4-Guys 1500/3000. Serial number F-2500. Three of the four tankers are red and white, and Tanker 2 was painted lime/white. All were painted in the colors of the current apparatus at the stations they were assigned. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - fighttheenemy666 - 06-13-2007 Ok...breaking my rule with this being a "Virginia" post, but I thought I would include a few West Virginia trucks that I was able to photograph while traveling for a business trip. Morgantown, West Virginia - I was looking for my hotel when I came across this interesting squad. This ALF use to be a aerial truck (WaterChief) and the FD converted it to a squad when the ladder had numerous mechanical problems. Here is the info I have on it.... Heavy Rescue 1 1978 American LaFrance/1995 FD s/n CE-14-5755 ex- Morgantown Aerial ladder truck I was told the FD completed the entire squad box. Appears they got the compartments from another truck (probably the old ladder truck). Due to be replaced. Would anyone have a photo of this truck when it was a ladder truck? Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - fighttheenemy666 - 06-13-2007 By the way, that is a winch on the front cab of the ALF covered by the black bag. Here is a rear view. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - fighttheenemy666 - 06-13-2007 This was my first trip to Morgantown.....so many hills. I dropped by another Morgantown station and a drill was being conducted. Caught Engine 4 out on the front ramp - this one is tall. For me to photograph it, I was standing on a rock wall. The light bar was removed from the top of the cab and mounted on the front part of the windshield because this engine was once assigned to a small station in Morgantown and it would not fit into the station with the lightbar on the top of the cab. Morgantown, West VA Engine 4 1987 Pierce Arrow 4x4 1500/750/25 Job number E3919 Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - fighttheenemy666 - 06-13-2007 The Monongalia EMS agency is run by the local hospital and they run the EMS calls in and around Morgantown. The Morgantown FD does not have ambulances but will run EMS assist calls when needed. The "heavy" squad assigned to the station is "Big Blue", or Rescue 69. It is a 1990 Ford F800/CFI. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - fighttheenemy666 - 06-13-2007 Some years ago, I photographed Tower 75 of Arlington, Virginia. It was a 1986 Duplex/Grumman 102' with serial number 17484AL. When the Pentagon was attacked on 9/11/01, this aerial was ready to be sold. That sale was delayed because of the extensive operation at the Pentagon. I was told that the large flag that was proudly displayed at the Pentagon during that time was put in place with the assistance of this tower. Not long after 9/11/01, the Grumman tower was sold to Shinnston, West Virginia. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-13-2007 Well, I just realized that I have been posting under the logon ID of one of firepics newest members, my son Andrew. Yea I know, I am raising him right. To continue with the previous post, I was traveling from Morgantown to Charleston, West Virginia and saw the exit for Shinnston. This was a highlight of my trip. The chief met me at the station and took the ex- Arlington tower out for photos. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-13-2007 The Shinnston tower has this nice tribute to Arlington on the truck. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-13-2007 I worked hard to get these photos from Harrisonburg, Virginia, which was the final stop of my trip home from West Virginia. I had to dodge rain, clouds, and lots of traffic. Harrisonburg has an older Northern Virginia fire truck in service that I have wanted to get, since my fire company runs with this station quite often. First up at Harrisonburg is HAZMAT 29, a 2003 KenWorth T300/Hackney. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-13-2007 Harrisonburg has three ladder trucks at this station. Truck 21 is currently for sale, and is a 1977 Hahn with a 106' FireSpire aerial. It sits outside since there is no room inside. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-13-2007 I posted this Seagrave tower on another thread.... Sterling Park, Virginia Tower 11 2006 Seagrave Marauder II 104' Prior to this Seagrave being placed into service, Sterling sold their old ladder truck to Harrisonburg. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-13-2007 Sterling's old ladder is now in service as Tower 2 in Harrisonburg. It is the department's reserve ladder. Harrisonburg, VA Tower 2 1991 Simon-Duplex/LTI 100' That wrap's up this group of photos from my most recent trips. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - Guest - 06-13-2007 Mike, Great photos, when you get back down towards Marion / Wytheville again, let me know. Know of several Old Dodge Fire Trucks in private buildings in this area. The 65 Dodge PW Ambulance in Marion, when did they have it painted?? I've got a photo of it, but it's two colors, white & orange, I think. Will dig out photo, scan and post for you. Not sure when Marion had the 1965 Dodge Power Wagon repainted. I would like to see it in white and orange. Thanks, Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA |
