Today I had the privilege to check out Coulson Air Tanker 131.  It's a Lockeed C-130Q that is considered a "next generation" fire tanker.

South Metro Engine 44 assisted with filing Tanker 131's 3,500 gallon water / retardant tank.  A big media day is being held at Centennial Airport tomorrow morning with the Governor and many state representatives in attendance.  There's a push from many state officials to contract with heavy tankers this fire season.

 

   

 

Engine 44 is housed near the south side of the airport and operates this 2004 American LaFrance Eagle with 750 gallon water tank and 1,250 GPM pump.

South Metro's ARFF Units were out watching for the afternoon.

 

Red 1

1999 E\-One Titan II 4×4 with a 1500 gpm pump, 1500 gallons of water, 200 gallons of AFFF & 450lbs Purple K. 

This unit is the primary ARFF rig for the north side of the airport.

South Metro Red 3

2004 Unimog / BME 4×4 with a 1,000 gallon water tank and 250 gpm pump.

This unit is the primary ARFF rig for the south side of the airport and is also used for wildland incidents around the district.

Thanks Tim.  They're hoping to get a contract from the State of Colorado but right now they're based in California.  We have a few USFS tanker bases around the state but most only have SEAT's and Helo's.

Interesting... I knew their was a USFS Base in Boulder but their was no Aircraft there when I was in town. Do you know where the other USFS Facilities are?

USFS resources are regularly on the move between locations and states based on severity.  It was pretty rainy when you were here which is probably why there weren't any tankers.  The base near Boulder at the Rocky Mountain Airport has been closed as of this year. 

 

Here are the wildland bases / locations...

 

Ft. Collins / Loveland Airport - USFS Tanker Base & Colorado SEAT Base

Walker Field Grand Junction - USFS Tanker Base

Durango / La Plata Airport - USFS Tanker Base

Pueblo Memorial Airport - Part time USFS Tanker Base (activated when needed)

Monument / El Paso County - Helitack

Dinosaur National Monument - Helitack

Rifle Airbase - Helitack

Cortez Airport - Colorado SEAT Base

Buckley Air Force Base - National Guard Helitack

Peterson Air Force Base - National Guard Helitack

Castle Rock - Rampart Helitack (Private company contracted to Douglas County)

 

Our elected officials are proposing the following...
  • Increase the number of Single Engine Air Tankers (SEAT) on exclusive use contracts from two to four.
  • Contract for the exclusive use of four Type 3 or larger rotor-wing aircraft. (Type 3 helicopters can carry 100 to 300 gallons.)
  • Contract for the exclusive use of two Type 2 or larger air tankers. (Type 2 air tankers can carry 1,800 to 3,000 gallons). The contingency, if the State is unable to contract for two air tankers, is to contract for two helitankers, or a combination of one fixed-wing air tanker and one helitanker.
