This is a brand new 2009 Pierce Contender for WPFPD replacing a totaled/wrecked 1999 KME Engine 51. WPFPD will be receiving a second matching Contender after the first of the year. The second rig had gone to bid and this was added as an emergency purchase after the KME was rear ended on US 71.

This unit is used for Med-Acts Haz-Mat, Tactical Medic, and Rehab support programs. This unit will respond to provide medical support at large incidents. It is also dispatched to all two alarm or greater fires to provide misting tents, heat tents, rehab for the firefighters. It carries various medical equipment for mass disaster and Haz-Mat incidents. This unit is stored in Olathe, Kansas at Med-Act Station 51.
It is painted to match the Ambulances.

EMS in the State of Kansas:
Between 1971-1973 the State of Kansas placed EMS Transport responsibility on all counties in the state. This was and still is very progressive. The law requires that the county government must decide who will provide EMS Transport within their county. Currently in Kansas most Counties provide either ALS or BLS transport services IE Johnson, Sedgwick (Wichita). Across the state some fire department were chosen by their county to provide the EMS transport service IE Great Bend FD, KCKFD. Shawnee County (Topeka) contracts with AMR.
In 1973 Johnson County, Kansas (KC Metro) passed a county wide tax to fund a county EMS transport agency. In 1974 Johnson County Medical Action (Med-Act) opened its doors providing the first ALS Paramedic service to the citizens. For the first twenty years most cities within the county still provided BLS ambulance response. This resulted in two ambulances at every EMS call. During this time period most fire departments disbanded there BLS ambulances and began first response with Engine or Truck Companies. Currently out of fourteen fire departments only one provides BLS ambulance response in tandem with Med-Act.

Interesting notes: The Federal Q Siren and chrome bracket were not delivered on the unit. It was added some time after 1978 although the foot pedal and siren brake button look factory installed. The Q was on the unit by 1986. The deck gun is off set and was added after 1978. They removed the only rear discharge so they could add the deck gun. The deck gun was on the unit by 1986. This unit vibrated badly. So the high-side compartment door would vibrate open. After replacing them twice, they had Pierce place D-Handle latches on the doors instead of paddle latches.
This unit was purchased for Fire House Two and ran as 920. In late 1986 Lenexa annexed the Monticello TWP vol Fire Department and made it Lenexa Fire House Three. Due to the small Fire House and tight roads 920 was moved to Fire House Three because of its short wheel base. Fire House Two took the Reserve 1968 American LaFrance Pioneer 923. In 1990 920 was renumbered 923 and the last digit county wide indicated the fire house number. It entered reserve in 1991 and was sold by 1995 to Wellsville. She is starting to show wear now but still had the original PA-20 siren.

Q-Siren added after delivery in 1978 but was on unit by 1986. Note acorn nuts hold the bracket on. Also the signal stat turn signal light. These were installed when the Q was added.

Yes 731 the 1972 was delivered with-out the Q siren. At some point the Q was moved to where the MARS light is in the photo and a white roof top was added and a big white strip painted. An Aero-Dynic was added just before it left the fleet in 1996. It was stationed orginally at Old Station 2 with a 1970 American International bumper pumper and a 1978 ALF Pioneer III. Then it moved to Fire Headquarters when 1 and 2 were combined in 1979. It was in reserve at Fire Headquarters when I was hired by the Fire Department.
720 was sold to Shawnee by Hays Fire Equipment in 1976 and was the FIRST E\-One in the Kansas City metro. Pretty cool. It was the second yellow rig for Shawnee the first was a 1974 American International Bumper Pumper the twin to the RED 1970 IH American. 720 orgianally had two Federal Power Lights on the roof. I was told this rig was wrecked in the late 1980's and it did go to E\-One for a refurb. It came back in 1989 White over Red with the MARS flush mounted between the head lights and new updated E\-One logo plates. It served until June of 2007 as a third line spare. It was donated to Greensburg Kansas after the tornado destroyed the city. The metro USAR guys told me they loved the rig and were responding all over Greensburg blowing the Q siren. They loved the Q but who doesn't. SFD really liked it and it served at all three fire houses before leaving. It looked much better RED.
I really loved their ALF Pioneer III it was sharp deep red. SFD just returned to ALF red with the delvery of the new Pierce Quint for 2's
