I remember 750 as a kid. It was the FIRST Aerial Ladder in Johnson County. Olathe had a 1971 Snorkel and Overland Park had a 1971 ALF Aero Chief, but by deffention they were not Ladders. So SFD took the cake for having a true ladder truck. Lenexa purchased a ALF 100ft Century in 1978.

750 was cursed from the start. It always had big ladder issues and was sold in 1989 only sixteen years of service. I believe the ladder failed the test in 1989 and that was the deciding factor. It was delivered two years late and the fire chief eventually lost his job because once it was delivered it had big issues. They did however run it as a true truck company and it made all the fires. It was a neat rig aside from the issues a great deep RED. It also carried a Life Net purchased from the factory. That was always a big thing Shawnee has the net if you need it. I believe OPFD's Aero Chief also carried a Life Net and Olathe's Seagrave Quad.

721 the 1964 Super Pumper was refurbished at ALF in 1978-79. It was re powered with a Detroit. This rig was the queen of the SFD. They loved her and she was at that point lettered Super Pumper. She left in the late 1980's and they now regret letting her go. She was the first big custom pumper purchased by SFD besides the open top 1955 Howe Defender. SFD still owns the Howe. Super Pumper was the primary reserve once she returned from ALF.

Thanks for posting, great photos.

Rick

Any idea where 750 went from Shawnee?

I have no Lenexa photos (from any era).

No idea, I will call my friends at Shawnee and ask. I have always wondered. Shawnee was big into MARS lights and then Federal Cross-Fire lights. Everything had one.

Emporia, Kansas had a simlar ladder truck of the same vintage. It always had issues to and was just retired a few years ago.

Note the Classic MARS 888 Light and Federal Q2b Siren. All KCK 70th Anniversary's were equipped in this manner. Later dual Federal beacon pipe lights were added in Clear lens officers side and Red Lens drivers side. This was the standard on all KCK units.

This was the first city purchased pumper but the third fire engine the department operated. This rig served unit 1968 when it was sold to Hume, Missouri. We have made contact with Hume, Missouri but cant ever get a clear story on its current state.

KCFD The NEW 2010 International/ Pierce Compressor-Generator-Light Tower Wagon for KCFD Air 1 Kansas City, Missouri. This will replace the old Air 1, 1994 Freightliner/ E\-One Compressor-Generator-Light Tower Wagon.

I apologize for the bad photos but the Pierce dealer shop was the best I could do.

It has a PA-300 and Dual Grover's with pull cord but NO Q siren, which is odd for KCFD. Also the roll-up doors are unpainted. Air 1 is staffed with one FAO and is stationed at Fire House 47 with Pumper 47 and Command 1. Fire House 47 is at the Fire Academy.

Rear fill station compartment. Air 1 is the first unit to have the chevron strips. KCFD opted not to have Chevron's on the new Truck 8 or Truck 13.
