Since lately I couldn't make a fire if my life depended on it, I'll try to resume posting apparatus.

To any of the Memphis guys,

What happens when a "in honor" or "dedicated" rig gets reassigned or replaced, does the new rig get lettered again with the same name or does the name retire with the rig?

The dedication name goes to the new piece of equipment.

Thanks Dano for the reply

It is suppose to! The ride that the 17's had, had Jimmy Kennedy's name on it and when the 17's got a new piece the old one went to another company with Jimmy's plate! I have been told that it has been returned to the 17's.

A shop goof!!

That is actually not always the way it goes. It seems to be a case by case basis. The LODD names will stay with a company regardless of the apparatus - in essence, the way Dano described. The name will pass to new apparatus assigned to the company unless that company suffers another LODD death. We have a couple of pieces that have smaller plaques with multiple names. E7 would be a good example, I'll see if I can find a pic of their plaque.

All names on apparatus are not LODD's however and they will be at the will and discretion of the current administration. For example, I do not think E5 has ever had a member that has died in the line of duty while assigned there. Therefore, the current Directors name is always put on E5 as it is at HQ's. Chief Arwood's name will be coming off if it hasn't already and Director Benson's will go on it. Chief Arwood's plate may end up on another piece or may end up in a big pile of other removed plates that have accumulated at the shop over the years.

Hope that makes sense.

Arwood's name has been put on Engine 10.

A batch of new units has come in. This will make the entire fleet red once they are all in service. They are by and large the same as the last order. All I have noticed that is different is the door handles and the addition of 9" X 7" leds on the rear. Here is one of them:

Speaking of Arwood, how do you guys like your new chief? I was down in Memphis with Code 3 for a Cure this summer and met Arwood on his last day, he didn't seem to interested in what we had to say (why would he on his last day?)... The union guys were great though! Hopefully I'll get a chance to stop by this summer and meet some more of you.

It's centered, the "Department" makes it look off center since it's so long. Centered distance and centered aesthetically can be two different things.

It is centered but it is not level.........Look at the bottom of the first and last letters in the arch

That is what I was thinking. Its not plumb!

Being an old Memphis boy, Still haven't figured why its 'MEMPHIS FIRE DEPARTMENT' and then somewhere else on the same ride is says 'FIRE DEPARTMENT OF MEMPHIS".

Don't feel bad John.......we don't have it figured out either!!!! Funny story. The small lettering on the lower rear doors reads "Commitment to Excellence". When the first batch was delivered, it read "Comittment to Excellence". They spelled commitment wrong!

And yes, I think you are right about those graphics. I will make sure to bring it someone's attention and let the manufacturer fix it.

Hey Memphis Members, any new photos of new apparatus that you guys can post?

Memphis Fire Dept - nealcraig - 07-09-2009

The latches are Eberhardt on the ambulance. They are free floating and much better than the old style paddle latches.
