I dont even have my REAL Q siren only a PA 3000 electronic. I'll have to get back in the habit of using the electronic.

Its all Factory issues from building to delivery. I have a long list of all sorts of items, the ladder is just the biggest. They have been working for six years to get everything resolved with the manfacture. Its not a good situation at all.

Hey Rick,
Is your regular Engine 62 actually a ladder truck? Or did you just call this one Engine 62 because its a pumper? Curious as to why they didnt loan you a ladder truck since thats what is being repaired.

Hi Eric,
We normally do not have an Engine 62. Fire Alarm asked that we use Engine 62 for easier tracking in the CAD system. We do use Truck for the ladder. Its numberd is Truck 61. E\-One told us they liquidated their entire demo fleet after the investor group purchase. So they gave us the Research and Development/ Engineering Quest engine. They never planned on selling it or using it as a fire engine. So the cleaned it up gave it a pump test and here it is, lucky us.
When our ladder went back in 2005 for a complete ladder rebuild a year after purchase. They gave us a 2004 white over red Cyclone II 75ft Quint that supposedly Houston had been borrowing. It was delivered with a 64 on the sides from Houston and we placed a Q61 on it. E\-One told us they just sold it to a department in Oklahoma this last year and it still had Q61 on the windows. Any ideas?

The rig mentioned for Houston was one of five leased for a year...
We had a number of Spartan/LTI 108' rigs fail their annual ladder testing and it was determined to not be financially feasible to fix them. They leased these 5 E\-One 75' quints to use until the arrival of new 100' rigs which had been ordered from E\-One.
While HFD had these an attempt was made to go to Quint Co.'s by closing an Engine Co. and Truck Co. That attempt failed and they were returned at the end of their lease.
L64, the one you had, ironically is 1st due truck company for Bush Intercontinental Airport. A location where a 100' aerial is needed, and who now runs a 105' ladder tower.

Larry, Thanks for the info on L-64, that is interesting. Funny thing we are part of IAFF Local 64. We though about leaving the 64 on it but the chief said no <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hysterical.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' /> . I agree Quint's suck and with 75ft you can't reach anything in our town. Quints also are a swiss army knife, they do a little of everything but nothing well. I'll take a pump and a dry truck any day over a quint. The loaner L64 was pretty well worn and I was not fond of it. It drove funny and rode funny too. The Cyclone II's also have a large step-in height compared to our Spartan or the old Pierce Arrow's. Without the Q siren most people figured the Ambulance or Police were coming to help. It did however have a good set of Grover's and pull chain which was redeeming.Thanks Steve for the info on OKC. I never took any photos of the rig as Quint 61, I boycotted it.
Most of us told the City in 2005 they should return our 95ft mid mount since it had so many issues the ladder being the biggest. The chief wanted to work on the issues. The chief took a lot of heat from the city over this rig. In 2004, we really wanted a Smeal-Spartan 100ft Mid-Mount or the second choice was the Pierce Dash 95ft Mid-Mount. The city went against the truck committee recommendation and purchased the second lowest bid which was E\-One. We gave a list a mile long since both of our E\-One Engine's have had issues. Funny our old Arrows and Ward LaFrance never gave us any trouble. Oh well it feels good to vent.

Well MU Winter Fire School will spare me two shifts. I walked in the Fire House the other night through the appratus room. As I rounded the corner WOW the yellow jumped out, man its odd looking. It also looks really weird sitting next to our RED Engine. I will say the body design is nice with a great low hose bed and the cab is roomy nicer than the cyclone II. I am not a roll-up door fan, our equipment seems to jam the doors shut and they are difficult to open and close. It does draw odd looks from the citizens. I got out of it the other day an thought this is how Metro's Best feels, black gear and yellow rigs <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hysterical.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Here is something you don't see every day. Riverside, MO Fire Department Quint 2 on a wrecker hook. I was at our local Pierce Dealer when Riverside's 2000 HME/ Fire Master 75ft RK Quint came on a wrecker hook. Apparently they had a small fire somewhere in the rig. This unit has been a challenge since delivery in 2000.

2000 HME/ Fire Master 75ft RK Quint. I could not find a build plate for Fire Master.
Riverside, Missouri has changed to a career fire department staffing one Engine each day with three firefighters. Riverside is a small landlocked community on the Missouri River and is boarded by Parkville, Kansas City, MO. Riverside has a Casino that gave the city a rebirth and has allowed them to split the Public Safety Department. They currently have plans for a second fire house.
NOTE: Good news is Gardner, Kansas is the only Public Safety Department left in the metro. Gardner is currently in talks with Johnson County Fire District 1 to have them provide fire protection for Gardner. At one time there were three full service Public Safety Departments in the metro Galdstone, MO Riverside, MO and Gardner, KS.

Rick, what were the "challenges" w/ this rig? Im just curious as we run a similar rig, same year, but it's a Smeal body & ladder. I'm personally not a fan of the HME cab but we have had rather good luck w/ our quint.

I remember living in KCMO when Riverside was still a Public Safety Department. First time I chased them to a fire I couldn't understand why so many cops were showing up on the scene in their patrol cars, until I saw a few of them jump into their back seats and don their turnout gear. Fire Master is a small builder in Springfield, Missouri. When delivered the CAT motor would not sync with the fire pump and RK aerial ladder. They have had issues where the fire pump would not throttle up or the aerial would not operate. They have also had various wiring issues. It all comes down haveing componets made by three differnt mfg's. This rig serves as the second out or reserve for the 1996 Freightliner/ Fire Master pumper. They now have a Pierce on order.

Sure thing,
Springfield, MO is the only large department that I am aware of that used Fire Master. Springfield started buying Freight-Liner Fire Master's when the Seagraves and ALF's were moved to reserve. Springfield now has moved on to better appratus and returned to custom chassie's although they are still lime green. Fire Master mainly supplies small towns or rural departments.

Leavenworth, Kansas Fire Department.
Home of the "Big House" yes the baddest of the bad are housed at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.
Leavenworth, Kansas is twenty miles north of Kansas City on Kansas Highway 7. Leavenworth is fast becoming a Kansas City Suburb. Leavenworth operates three fire houses with One 75ft Quint, Two Engines, One Heavy Rescue that cross staffs a 100ft Tower Ladder dry no pump and One Battalion Chief. Leavenworth only responds to fires and entrapment's. They do not provide EMS response unless requested by the county EMS. Leavenworth is unique in the fact that at one time three government fire departments operated within the city limits. They were the Leavenworth VA Hospital Fire Department, Federal Penitentiary, and Fort Leavenworth. Leavenworth now provides automatic aide to the VA Hospital and the VA Fire Department was disbanded. Fort Leavenworth responds from two fire houses and now protects the Penitentiary.
