I was told by Hall County FF's that there is a SPLOST issue in an upcoming election.  If voted in, there are plans to replace most of the fleet (apparatus from 2000 and older) with new ones, which will be painted black/red.

This & That from Here & There - GA_Dave - 02-06-2015

This morning I headed south to Pulaski County's main station in Hawkinsville, GA.  It was not my first visit to the massive, old, nine-bay metal building, deep enough for a tractor-trailer tanker or two normal size rigs, in each bay.  During a visit in 2012, I photographed six rigs I had not previously shot.  I stopped by again last spring and there were another four or five rigs I had never seen before, but there was no one around that could move them outside for me.  They have five other unmanned stations in the County and things get moved around a lot.  Part of my plan today was to get photos of those rigs, but things don't always go as planned!  When I arrived, I found that the station was empty and abandoned, as was the police department next door.  A short time later, I found someone who directed me to the new station.  When I got there, the bays were open, filled with all the rigs from 2012 trip.  The rigs from last year were nowhere to be found, just like the guys on duty.  After about an hour's wait, I gave up.  Maybe next time.....

I did, however, find this rig sitting behind the station, not lettered or in service and undergoing some repairs.  Since it was parked as it was, I took the shot and added it to the list of the other rigs I will return for.  Does anyone recognize it from it's previous Navy base?

I spent the next few hours at Peach County.  They have added several rigs since my last visit, but it took a while as everyone was busy unloading a surplus military field kitchen they had just received.

Interesting looking equipment at Peach County, are they rural?  I know I'm going out on a limb and I'm going to probably step in a pile of cow chips

but I assume they don't have much money.  Looks like most if not all the equipment is second hand and some possibly X-military so close to free

is that true?

Nothing wrong with that, matter of fact those departments interest me more than the ones with a house full of new toys.  I love the variety.

Peach County is a mostly rural area just south of the center of the state.  About 30.000 people live within it's 151 square miles, one third of those live in the City of Fort Valley, which has it's own FD.  The County FD responds from six stations.  Stations 1 and 3 are staffed 24/7 while the rest are staffed on weekdays, with everything else being volunteer operated.  There is some money, but they make the best of opportunities that come their way, like the field kitchen.  Their proximity to Robins AFB doesn't hurt, as several pieces of equipment have come from there, including the trailer of Tanker 2.  That Mack tractor is the third one that I know about that has pulled it.  They recently got another, newer version pulled by an 1990's International tractor.  Once painted and lettered, it will replace Tanker 2.  Yes, I'll have to go back to shoot it, along with another rig that was still in the works.  I'll be posting yet another x-military rig tomorrow.

The six front line pumpers were all purchased new, two in 1989, one each in 2001 and 2005 and another pair in 2009.  Most of their other apparatus were put together in-house, including four brush trucks, two air/light trucks and more tankers, similar to Tanker 6.  I agree, an interesting department.

On March 5th, I began a 10 day, 1558 mile "hunting" trip to Florida.  I joined up with three friends: John Degenhardt, Ron Arnow and Jack Mersereau.  We all met up at Ron's house in The Villages for dinner on Thursday evening.

Friday morning arrived with overcast skies and scattered sprinkles.  A nearby antique truck show parade, that included a few fire apparatus, was our first stop.  The weather and the parade route were not photo friendly, so we followed them to the dispersal point at one of the shopping centers in The Villages.  By then the weather was a slight bit better and I managed to shoot two antique apparatus.

This rig was built by a small builder in southern New Jersey named Cresci on a 1935 Chevrolet chassis.  It has a 250 GPM pumpand a 750 gallon tank.  It is also collector owned.

From there, we headed over to Citrus County to get a couple slightly newer rigs.  The weather was not helpful.....
