Ansonia, CT Engine 1 was replaced in 2001 with a Ferrara Inferno 1250 / 750 / 20A / 40B pumper. The old Ward was sold to a fire department in New Hampshire, I don't know the name but I do know that the truck is now red. Though I'm from AFD Co. 4 (same side of town as E-1) I rode this truck a few times and it was repowered around 1995 due to an engine problem. She was a good truck especially with the small wheel base for the tight streets of Ansonia's westside. I took my apparatus drivers test on this rig.
Any chance this is the truck?

Comparing the two pics, I'd say there was a good chance they are the same rig.

I found this one stored in "scanned" files;I guess I forgot to post it <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_redface.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Icon_redface' /> . South Windsor CT, no info at all. The VERY poor quality is courtsey of a malfunctioning lense <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Banghead' /> . I shot about 50 rigs over 2 days that came out screwed up in various ways.

Well John Thank You Very Much! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yourock.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Yourock' /> I'm not very good at fixing pics that are very messed up. I'm still fairly computer illiterate!

I've got about 50 more you may be able to help me with.LOL
Is there a story as to why this rig has the Liberty Bell on the door insteaed of the county seal? LA County is a long way from Philadelphia.
Many of the LA County engines have a marking that represents the local community that they are assigned to, and not the standard LA County seal. In this case, the bell on the side was what La Canada used at the time. They have since updated it to something new, but at least one of the engines and the truck co. out of station 82 has that insignia on the door and not the regular logo.

Very interesting rig, Juergen! Maybe our Arizona friend Dave can find out more info about that one. My list shows three mid-1970's rigs going to "Phoenix", but that could have just been the dealer's location.

Ward LaFrance Ultravision - Guest - 03-04-2007

Dave & Juergen,

We haven't been up there yet to Circle City, but as soon as we are, will get all the info posted. This is a very unusual rig that we are getting ready to hunt down along with Bagdad, Az.

The 3 WLF's from Phoenix have been gone for years. I never saw them, but did find one out of service years ago at the Verde Rural FD between Camp Verde & Jerome, Az.

Stayed tuned and we'll get the info!!!!!

David

Here is another interesting WLF 4x4 pumper. The San Bernardino Co FD in Wrightwood/CA had this 1973 model 80-746 with 1500 gpm-pump and 500 gallon-tank.

That is a cool looking Ward.

I know this was posted before, but here is another shot of LACoFD E51 at the headquarters building in the early 80's.

I posted this in the relics thread, but this ex-LACoFD is waiting for auction.

Ok 3 things that I see that I question if this is the REAL Engine 51...

1) The way the numbers are on the front and side (Not the same as the ones on 'THE SHOW'

2) The hose rack on the side was NEVER on the real rig

3) Radio antena was not on the side of the cab.

But it still looks nice!

This IS the actual truck. Remember the show was in the 70's and LA County made some minor modifications to it. Not to mention when this photo was shot station 51 DID NOT exist, it was Station 60 and had a Crown until they received an early KME. Also, not to mention that my father was VERY good friends through his work with the PIO at the time, and had access to many things the casual buff did not. If I am remembering correctly, I was about 5 or 6 at the time this was taken, and it was during "Fire Service Day" when LA County has many displays for the public.

Ward LaFrance Ultravision - Guest - 03-06-2007

The lettering looks LA County to me but the reflective 51 is not right. From what I have seen and been told by others. The WLF donated to Univeral E-51 didn't have a lot of the features of the LACO rigs.

Ward LaFrance Ultravision - marco17 - 03-06-2007

Oh well guys, maybe it is a "fill-in." The photo is at least 25 years old and I may not be remembering the facts quite right. Either way....it's a Ward right? <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />
