last summer this rig was sitting in a yard right on Rt. 78 in Hamburg, PA, right next to the highway.

1959 Mack B-85F, semi-cab conv., 750 gpm, delvd 9-30-59, chassis no.1392, single booster reel on top, R.F.D.on hood, NEVERSINK 3 INSTITUTED APR 14, 1829 on cab doors, city ordered 2 of these-other went to Junior No.2, seen 10-24-93 at Berks Co.fire training center-Morgantown Rd-out-of-service-sitting out in weather rusting away, lettered Eng.4 (reserve unit prior to retirement), when in service had added red painted fence wire upper cab enclosure, green 5 point star with numeral 3 in center on cab doors, plated numeral 3 on grille, in summer,1974 involved in collision with car at 3rd& Buttonwood Sts-2 occupants of car killed, in 1994 offered for sale, single compartment before rounded rear fender, broad plated bumper, no small compartment under cab door-driver’s side like Junior No.2, these were the last Mack engines purchased by the city-11 were purchased since 1940, in 1983 when Eng.1 – Diamond-T/Hahn demolished in accident-renumbered Eng.1 and placed in service until 1985 when new Seagrave delvd

1950 Mack, Type 75, open-cab conv., 750/250, delvd with broad painted front bumper with 2 chrome horizontal strips and sealed beam spot lights mounted on each side of flat one-piece windshield frame, booster reel at back step, portable deck gun, converted to chemical unit-hard suctions removed, in 1994 in reserve status, in 2000 in service as Chemical 1-retrofitted as foam unit-see FAJ Mar-Apr,2000 pg 33, HS removed-5 gal cans of foam mounted on body shelf?, in 2002 taken oos

1944 Mack, Type 75, open-cab conv., 250/400, 12-cylinder, one of 6 made, separate 4-cylinder gasoline pump motor, referred to as combination wagon with booster pump, this truck was dispatched to field and forest fires throughout the city and on Mt.Penn, purchased in wartime to replace the 1926 Amer LaFr chemical which was demolished in collision on 3-27-44, unique body behind pump mounted behind seat, delvd with narrow chrome bumper and large spotlight at officer’s cowl, designated Engine 8, in 1986 retired from service and sold to John Metzler and two co-owners, donated to German American Firefighters Assn-Phila-restored by Swenson Skills Center-N.E.Phila high school students at no labor cost-materials only, mechanical rehab performed by GAFA member Dick Ploucher at no labor cost-parts only, painted radiator shell, housed at Roslyn FC (Montgomery Co.),PA station, only new apparatus purchased by city during WWII, in 2-08 sat outside building in Bensalem Twp.-Bucks Co.-in need of master cylinder

1976 PemFab/Hamerly, Cincinnati canopy cab, 1250/500, one of 3 purchased, $69,500, in 1980 station closed-transferred to Marion, in 1989 rehabed by J.C.Moore, Detroit diesel, 8V71, auto trans, in 1996 offered for sale-body shifted off of chassis, in 12-99 PAFM pg 198 offered for sale-in very poor condition-minimum bid $1000-in 2-00 sold to Cohen’s Junkyard-Thorndale,PA



Riverside



1976 Hahn 84, canopy cab, 1750/750, model HCP-17, delvd 2-16- 76, $88,249, in 1991 rehabed by J.C.Moore-cab and body rebuilt-new 500 gal steel tank-repainted RW, in 1999 booster tank replaced by KME-placed in reserve status, in 2000 designated reserve Eng.12, in 2002 became Eng.13, in 12-04 transferred to Rainbow-Junior station when Washington-Union station closed down, had largest capacity pump in city when purchased, third Hahn engine purchased by city

1974 Hahn 84, canopy cab tractor, 100 ft Pirsch Senior 3-section aluminum tillered aerial ladder, model HCC-33, delvd 3-29-74, $101,000, Pirsch ser.no.PM-51, housed 9-75, first diesel powered apparatus in the city, first LYW apparatus in city, in 1989 rehabed by J.C.Moore-re-painted RW, in 1994 went into reserve status, Detroit diesel, Allison HT-70 trans, ser.no.H-883?, while in service was on fire in station-extent of damage unknown, in 1997 retired from service-too costly to repair main, in 3-98 PAFM pg 268 offered for sale, in 6-98 sold for $15,000 to individual, first 100 ft Ladder

1956 Pirsch custom conv.open-cab, 75 ft aluminum mid-mount aerial ladder, 214 ft of aluminum ground ladders in double bank, 6 cyl Waukesha gas motor, 5-spd man.trans., 2.5 KW Onan generator, crude platform built over and cage with doors around cab for protection, when purchased-this was new aerial ladder (not a replacement) bringing to four the number of aerials in service in the department-recommended when Fire Underwriters conducted inspection, see 11-83 PAFM pg 34-offered for sale, in 1984 sold-min.bid $5000, ser.no.2254, model 64BZ, second and last complete Pirsch aerial ladder purchased by city, rear fender compartments

Bruce, I'll have to get with you at some point. Some of Al's information is incorrect. Ironically, I had just began corresponding with him about a month or so before he died. I wondered what had happened when the emails stopped being answered.



for instance, Engine 12 was front line until 1994. That is when the city redeployed the manpower to 2 firefighters on the rigs.
