It's Squad #4 that has the chevrons on wrong.

The current air shop building was the fire department stable. What you are thinking of was old #11. There were some bins where the horse feed was kept that looked like stalls. There would have been no way to get horses into the basement of either station.

History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - Guest - 07-14-2008

At 1442 hours It was anounced over Atlanta Fire Radio that Fire Station Number 7 will be decommissioned. There was a closing ceremony today at 2 PM, amid many protesters on hand and this was just one of the latest setbacks to the City of Atlanta's Budget battle and the AFD. Farewell No. 7.

Fire Station No. 7 "The Rock"

R.I.P 9/1/1910 - 07/14/2008.

Engine 7 No longer in service and Air-7 will be relocated to another firehouse today. Home unknown at press time.

History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - Guest - 07-14-2008

Lets hope the voters remember this.

They can reopen the station if things turn around right?

History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - Guest - 07-14-2008

^ I doubt it will ever reopen as my basis is going by past closures. When its gone ITS Gone! And so everyone knows when you buff ATL, they are probably disbanding "SQUAD 4" as well! AFD's only Rescue Company. Can you BELIEVE IT!

History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - dJames - 07-14-2008

So how about that press conference today where the mayor showed up, and then went towards the crowd talking about we're about to see the Philadelphia side in her come out. What a class act. I doubt Squad 4 will ever go, but sure their manpower will. Feel for those in recruit school. Farewell # 7.

History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - Ladder 68 - 07-14-2008

The answer to most cities problems, cut back the fire department and close companies. Thats because they don't think about fire fighter safety, response times, coverage, etc.

How and the helk can they close Squad 4 when they are the only rescue for the whole city? Even in our part of the world they wouldn't do that (Or would they?).

And what is the "Philadelphia Side" mean?

Man oh Man, i just watched that news coverage of the press conference and station decommissioning. Those residents were screaming and yelling and than she stated something like "Your going to See My Philadelphia side come out". (Wikipeda denotes she was born in Philly) She is a Class Act. Start the impeachment process already. I like what Jim Daws the Local 134 IAFF President said to one of the news stations. That Atlanta has a population of 520,000 and the rule of thumb is that there should be 1 Engine Company for every 10,000 residents and with the closing of Station 7 they are going to fall to 33 Engine Companies. And those units wil be running with skeletal crews. OK, Sorry for going on my soapbox.

Heard a rumor she wants an upper level cabinet position in Obamas Administration if he wins.

Perhaps I missed something reading the Fox5 story link, but I didn't see anything about Squad 4 being disbanded. [quote name='gradymedic' post='229664' date='Jul 15 2008, 07:33 ']Here is the WSB-TV video clip of Sista Shirley returning to her roots during the proccedings at St 7

While I doubt #7 will reopen---14-16-17-1 -2 and 20 are not all that far way--they have re-opened other stations. A case in point is 17. 3 could be an example too, but they did not really reopen near there old station.

No wonder my buddies are retiring.

You see all the positive growth etc in Atlanta and hear the the Mayor is actually somewhat intelligent, and then you see the S**T happening, I simply so not understand it.

P. S. I hear Loudoun County Virginia is hiring. Damn good department, could use a few season jakes. Check with MiKe Sanders for details

History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - firescooby - 07-16-2008

It's funny how the day after the station is closed, a delay occurs. Two Atlanta PD officers were shot. Engine 7 was the 2nd in unit, but would have been the 1st in ALS unit. There was at least a 3 minute delay in getting ALS to the officers.

The FD and PD union presidents blasted the politicians and department heads on TV.

History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - Shoe - 08-02-2008

Atlanta City Council will have a final vote on August 18 for the funding to re-open Station #7. Word is that the place was ransacked after it was closed. Funding for the Squad is stalled. We are expecting a huge exodus of jakes from the ATL before the first of the year. Almost all companies are down to running with 3 most days. Not aware of any "brown-outs" yet, but it appears that they are coming.

The police department apparently has not been watching the news since they are still calling Station #7 and Squad #4 at morning roll-call. They have also dispatched Squad #4 on some fire calls since they have been closed. I've heard that Engine #6's crew jumped on the squad truck and went since it was dispatched. We are recording the multitude of dispatch errors in the hope that some day we can justify getting dispatch back. Stay tuned...

This really sucks loosing fire houses and companies put us and public in danger. I visted 7's one year ago, great Jake's really took time to talk and show an out of town fireman around. Those fire poles are the smallest dia. I have ever seen. Not much to hook when I slid the pole. I got the full tour basment, up stairs the one thing is the fire house in is really rough shape. They Jake's were doing their best to keep it nice but big peeling paint and plaster. They said the kitchen on the first floor behind the engine room was the old horse stalls. It even had the sweep out holes on the base boards. There is an awsome fire place on the second floor in the captains quarters. The room was big enought I think it might have been the day room long ago. The fire place was built with emerald green brick. Really cool. The new overhead doors were installed and the arch above Air 7 was open air no glass. The Jake's said it had been that way for a few days and it was unknown when it would be replaced. Sad 7's did not make 100 years of service only two years aways. I ask the city WTF take care of us after all we might save your ass or your families. Atlanta already only runs three on the Trucks and most are Tillers Capt and two FAO's no firefighers. They lost the fourth on the Trucks many years ago. Truck work is really hard with only three. Sorry for the rant but being a fireman is the best life to have in the world. I always say we are the best kept secret.

Council voted on Monday to fund the re-opening of 7. In a letter to Council, the Mayor has pledged to veto the ordinance. If Council overrides the veto, she can take the money and use it on something else anyway. 7's rig is now Engine #36.
