You mean to say, what WAS the function of the fire patrol, they were disbanded a few years back. Basically they were salvage companies, I don't know much but a simple internet search of New York Fire Patrol will turn up an some useful information.

The Fire Patrol can trace its beginnings back to 1803, when the Mutual Assistance and Bag Corporation was formed by a group of volunteers to protect and preserve the contents of buildings from fire and water damage...Operated by the New York Board of Fire Underwriters, the New York Fire Patrol was organized in 1839 to patrol lower Manhattan. Their job was to discover fires and to prevent losses to insured properties. The New York Fire Patrol evolved, and in 1867, a state charter was granted to legally extinguish fires and conduct salvage operations throughout New York City. The New York Fire Patrol is the oldest paid fire service in the United States, and it also remains the last insurance-funded fire salvage corps in the country. - DISBANDED IN 2006 -

Last month I visited Manhattan one weekend to check out the FDNY Fire Zone Safety Center on W.51st and FDNY Firehouse Museum (ex Engine 30) on Spring Street and while I was there also visit a few firehouses.

Here is old 30 Engine which is now the museum.

FDNY x-Engine 31 located at 87 Lafayette Street, Manhattan. This has got to be one of the most gorgeous firehouses ever built. Shame the company was disbanded and house is no longer in use.
