What's to explain? Its a group of civillain volunteers who provide rehab services. The LAFD provided an old RA to use.

[/quote]

That pretty much describes the function of the Support Unit. Last few times I've seen it was at a department related event where the volunteers were passing out drinks to people out of the back of the rig.

Rehab Air Tender 59

Why the different size wheels on the rear axels?

It has something to do with the fact that the very rear of the RAT (Rehab Air Tender) has a toilet.

Los Angeles Fire Dept - dodger2004 - 11-07-2010

are all the RATs the same as EA1? or is there different configurations to all of them?

All of the RAT are the same except for EA 1 which has a small walk in area in the body.

The first KME's will be going to Engine 27 (Hollywood) and Engine 98 (Pacoima), Engine 98's KME is now in service. Also Truck's 29, 29 & 88 as well as Truck 98 will be recieving new ALF Tillers.

Los Angeles Fire Dept - hp1530 - 12-03-2010

Word is that Engine 98 is already in their new KME engine.

How does a toilet effect the size of the wheels?

The rehab equipment (which is a lot of stuff) along with the air bottle filling equipment (compressor, cascade system, air bottles, fill station) makes for a heavy truck. Add a toilet in there (plus the weight of the person who might need to use the john) and you got the truck at or slightly over the axle weight limit hence the extra axle.

I understand the extra axle but why such small tyres on it and not the same as the other ones?

I'm going to make a SWAG at this. I'm guessing that the weight of the vehicle just SLIGHTLY exceeded (or has the potential of exceeding) the GVW of the single rear axle, so instead of spending the $$$ for a tandem rear axle they installed a smaller tag axle and saved some money.

A lot of dumps around here, the tag is smaller, not unusual, at least here.

Went by Station 98 today, to see if I could get photos of the new KME. They were not in qtrs, so I stuck around to see if they returned fairly quick. Waited abt 5-10 minutes & found something interesting. They are adding the unit number to the side like they did with Engine 51 @ LAX. They have painted a large "98" on the rearmost roll up compartment doors.

The small tag axle takes up quite a bit less space than a fullsize axle, too...

Engine 27 in their new KME. Caught them as they were loading hose after a small drill in front of their house. In service since 12/17/10.

Hmm what are the U shaped brackets on the back step?

I read about the Capt that was hurt in the car explosion, two questions any word on how he is doing and what caused the car to explode.
