Great photos....but of course some questions...

Did Lawrence re-establish Engine Co. 01? I thought they had been disbanded with Quint 1 being established.

With a new '10 rig going to Olathe Quint 53 what happened to their '09 white over red quint?

In Lenexa is Engine 92 a new company in addition to Quint 92 or did they re-assign rigs and companies?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Larry,

Lawrence did reestablish Engine 1. Prior to 2005 you probably remember Fire House 1 was a double company of Engine 1 and Ladder 1. When 5's opened in 2005 both Engine 1 and Ladder 1 became Engine 5 and Ladder 5. Fire House 5 is kind of in the center of the city off the SW side of the KU Campus. There is also an agreement with KU that a 100ft Ladder must be at 5's since they donated the land. Chief McSwain RIP wanted the Engine and Ladder at every fire in the city with a quick response since the city would not give him a second ladder company. He retired just after the new Quint 1 was ordered. The new chief switched Quint 1 to RED and found Quint 1 could not maneuver the tight downtown streets for alarms. So he decided reopen Engine 1 and reassign Quint 1's unit to Fire House 3 since Quint 3 was the oldest Quint in service. He also prefers Dry Rescue Company over Dry Truck Company. So he decided to make Fire House 5 Ladder 5 a Dry Rescue Company with no ground ladders and Engine 5 a Wet 100ft Tower Ladder Quint. Although the Tower will have ISO ground ladders including a 40ft Bangor Ladder for the alleys. Ladder 5 will become special call as it is currently. Ladder 2 the neat 1987 FMC Conestoga-Spartan-LTI 100ft Dry truck will be sold that is the current reserve ladder.

Current:

Engine 1, Medic 1

Quint 2, Medic 2

Quint 3, Medic 3

Quint 4, Medic 4

Engine 5, Medic 5, Shift Division Chief, Rescue 5-Ladder 5 (Rescue 5 cross-staffs Ladder 5)

Olathe here is an interesting story. Olathe used to be Five Engine's and One Truck until the ugly quint concept struck again in 1996. Over the years Olathe at the high operated two Engine's and four Quint's with one Rescue. In the last five years Olathe has been trying to move away from Quints and back to the Truck and Engine concept. Quint 1 (51) became Engine 1 (51), the Rescue moved back into the Truck Company. This has been hard since they sold the city on the idea of how glorious Quints were. With the two 1996 and 1999 Quint;s rapidly approaching ten years old and the wheels falling off. They ordered the two 2009 White over Red 75ft Quints for for Quint 2 (52) and Quint 3 (53). They wanted to purchase one 105ft Truck but like I said earlier they had educated the city on the glory of Quints. They had money in 2010 for one more quint and they new PUC-PAL was ordered for Quint 3 (53). With the idea of Four Engine's and Three Quints and a Truck-Rescue at 1's. The chief then retired.

The new Chief switched to sold RED from white over red and reestablished the Truck Concept. So this placed one of the 2009 Quints in reserve since Quint 2 was converted to Truck 2. The Rescue and Truck 1 cross-staff each other. The other 2009 was sent to Quint 6 (56) far northwest Olathe and replaced the loan 2005 Quint. Quint 6 (56) will most likely always be a Quint until a Truck Engine can be added there far down the road.

Current:

Engine 51, Battalion 51, Rescue 51 (cross-staffing Truck 51 1989 95ft Tower Ladder Truck Company)

Truck 52 114ft Bronto, Battalion 52

Quint 53, Inspector-Safety 51

Engine 54

Engine 55

Quint 56

Engine 57

Lenexa opened Fire House 5 in 2009. This resulted in the movement of units. They had been running a double company Engine, Quint from 1's for the past six years and they moved one unit to 5's. Lenexa is currently three Quint's, two Engine's, and two Squads. They disbanded the three fire department ambulance's and placed two squads in service with two each. Quint 95 carries four and one moves over staffs the rescue for fires. Quint 91 and Engine 93 each cross-staff Truck 91 and Truck 93 if the Truck Companies are special called.

Current:

Quint 91, Squad 91, Battalion 91 (Cross-Staff Truck 91 2001 95ft Tower-Ladder)

Engine 92, Squad 92

Engine 93 (Cross-Staff Truck 93 1990 95ft Tower-Ladder)

Quint 94

Quint 95, Rescue 95 (staffed with one from Quint for fires)

Hope this helps sorry it was so long.

Stay Safe Brother,

Rick

Excellent information. Thanks for the detail.

But to make sure I understand this...

In Lawrence is R05 or L05 staffed primarily?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Larry,

Rescue 5 is the permanently staffed rig cross-staffing the Ladder. They normally have four.

First Alarm Dispatch is Two Quints or One Quint/Engine 1, Engine 5, Rescue 5, Ladder 5, Division Chief. Normally the Division after the dispatch says place Ladder 5 in service. Then just the rescue goes. If it is a Commercial, Hospital, or University, two bring the Rescue 5 and two bring the Ladder 5. If the rescue is at three then they all pile in the Ladder. But the Rescue is the permanently staffed rig. It would be simpler if the Ladder was staffed as a Truck and the Rescue was special call. As we both know the value of a Truck on the fire ground. Rescue Companies are in-style right now in the mid west, like quints were ten years ago.

RIP: Truck 9 1996

NOTE: Rescue 9's 2007 E\-One was laid on its side in December. They have assigned Reserve Rescue 3 to Rescue 9. Interesting history this unit was originally purchased by Topeka, Kansas as a City Service Ladder Truck and rejected at delivery. It was sold to KCFD and was the first rescue organized replacing Truck 9 at Fire House 35. You can always tell it apart due NO Q Siren and Roll-up doors. So in a weird way it is home again at its original assignment.
