Rescue Division Battional Chief

40hr Battalion Chief in charge of the entire KCFD Rescue Division. He will respond from home at night and weekends.

Unless something has changed in the last 2 weeks since I visited with Chief Ackerson the B/C has either an F-250 or 350 crew cab pickup he takes home. This F-450 is used by the 40hr Captain and is used to pull any number of trailers the Rescue Division has stored in their warehouse. Rick take a ride past therscue warehouse, they were putting up a nice sign and shields on the building for all the Rescue Co's. Also Rescue 9 is in the process of being repaired with the cost reportedly in the $150,000 neighborhood.

Does KCFD still have that Sutphen midship aerial in service? If memory serves it was Truck 9 near the West Bottoms neighborhood.

Jamie,

Third and Last KCFD Sutphen Tower

The west bottoms Sutphen was Truck 6 with Pumper 9, High-Rise 102 at Fire House 7. It is now out of service at the Fire Academy. Truck 6 has had two Sutphens over the years. The first was a Lime-Green 1979 85ft and second was a 1996 White over Red 100ft. The 1979 was repainted White over Red in 1990 it served Truck 6, very short at Truck 5, then Truck 11 never entered reserve and was disposed of around 1999. The 1996 was at Truck 6 then reassigned to Truck 13 it too never entered reserve and is awaiting disposal at the fire academy. She is out back this photo was last Summer. She is in a snow drift right now.

Stay Safe,

Rick

Purchased off the floor from the 1979 IAFC or FDIC here at Kansas City Bartlet Hall. It was orginaly White over Lime Green repainted in 1990 and the twin Federal Power Lights were removed for the Federal Aero Dynic and the twin PA sirens were moved to the bumper. Later served Truck 5 short, then finished at Truck 11 in 1999.

Sutphen

1500/300

100ft Tower Ladder

Purchased as a Demo from the 1990 IAFC or FDIC. Last unit to be ordered Lime Green and with no Q Siren. Served its career at Truck 3 and I don't believe it was ever a reserve that I remember. A Q Siren was added in 1997 when all the Q-less rigs had Q sirens added by the shops. This rig replaced the White over Red Hendrickson-E\-One-Simon Snorkel.

1993-1996 was a great time period in KCFD history for the Truck Companies. Seven Trucks were Tillered, Two were Sutphen Towers, and Three were Sutphen Straight Ladders. Only the Towers had pumps during this period. Chief Fisher was a advocate of dry ladders and tillers.

1500/500

Some features to note: These were Diesel, Auto-Matic, Power Steering, 1500gpm pumps, Stang Intelligent Deck Pipes, Twin Federal Power Lights, Twin chrome PA speakers on the bumper, Q sirens, MARS Lights. The nine 1976 Mack MB pumpers had similar features.

These were the first Factory Delivered Lime-Green rigs and First with MARS lights. They were not popular due to the color but were actually really great rigs. They survived until 1997ish in the reserve fleet. KCFD sadly had Lime-Green 1974-1990. One of America's most aggressive fire departments suffered on a number issues through the 1970's and 1980's the lime-green paint just added to the strain. On the bright side they have always kept their Cairns Traditional Helmets.

Lenexa, KS Fire Department (Johnson County)

Ex: 924,921,931,Reserve Engine 921 always operated from Fire House One

# 921

1987

E\-One Hurricane

1500/750

First four door unit delivered in Johnson County, Kansas.

Pre 2001 switch in JoCo to clear identifiers. Lenexa used large numbers on the four in service Engine Companies and Two Ambulances for ID on Lenexa Fire Scenes. Auto aid really did not exist at this time. Engines were Unit 924 radio 921 (1), 923 radio 922 (2), 929 radio 923 (3), 928 radio 924 (4) every engine was a E\-One Hurricane. Ambulance 943 radio 941 (1), 942 radio 942 (2). During this period the Truck Companies ALF 950 later E\-One TL 951 was not staffed really not used.

Originally the three digit number was the unit number Photo 924 later this became the shop number and did not represent the radio number. IE photo #924 as Radio #921.

These were super sharp rigs. Great Detroit Sound. They just needed a Q siren!!

Rick, I remember going to the Chief's show in KC back in 1996 with Dave D. and passing by the 19s and seeing that Seagrave pumper sitting inside. Nice rig! Isn't there a ladder truck that also runs out of that house?

Jeff,

The last classic Fire House in the City No.19 WPA building built in 1939. Until 2006 they FH19 was Pumper 19 and Truck 7 (tiller). Due to some on going issues the Fire Chief moved FH19 over a few blocks and at the same time closed FH32 on Main Street. The new current FH 19 houses Pumper 19, Pumper 32, Truck 7, and Car 106. The move left a large coverage gap south of the County Club Plaza old FH32 first due. The New current FH 19 is the only double pumper house in the city now.

In 1996 they were running as Pumper 19, 1987 E\-One Hurricane 1500/500 White over Lime Engine. Truck 7 was a 1986 Seagrave Tiller 100ft Ladder White over Lime.

Stay Safe Brother,

Rick

Now that you mention the Seagrave tiller, I do remember it sitting inside that house as well. But if memory serves me correctly, I saw that old Seagrave pumper sitting in the 19s at the time, I guess running as a spare while the frontline E\-One was out for repairs. That was a neat old house! I've been back to KC a few times since then and remember seeing the E\-One Ladder 7 driving by Country Club Plaza when my family and I was there about 8 or so years ago, and a white Ford Expedition BC vehicle was trailing them. I guess that was 106.

The most coveted Truck Company assignment on the KCFD. Ten Truck on the Ave. as the job calls it, answers from Fire House 23 with Pumper 23 and Car 104 on Independence Ave. This is the heart of the Ghetto. They don't make the most alarms in the city, however they make Fires. Originally a stand alone Truck Company assigned to Fire House 21 three miles from their current house on the Ave. The new Fire House 23 opened December 19th, 1977 with Pumper 23, Pumper 12, Truck 10, Car 104 as part of the new Fire Improvement Plan.

When Truck 8 was assigned a new Pierce Tower Ladder in 2009. Truck 10 was given #3193 since it was better condition. Truck 10's original piece became Reserve Truck 3.
