The most coveted Truck Company assignment on the KCFD. Ten Truck on the Ave. as the job calls it, answers from Fire House 23 with Pumper 23 and Car 104 on Independence Ave. This is the heart of the Ghetto. They don't make the most alarms in the city, however they make Fires. Originally a stand alone Truck Company assigned to Fire House 21 three miles from their current house on the Ave. The new Fire House 23 opened December 19th, 1977 with Pumper 23, Pumper 12, Truck 10, Car 104 as part of the new Fire Improvement Plan. Fire House 12,21,23 closed to create New Fire House 23.

KCFD is actually smaller.
In 1975 they operated 40 Pumpers, 15 Trucks from 43 Fire Houses.
The 1977 fire improvement plan created four double pumper houses, six quints, six midi pumpers, and relocated a number of companies. The firemen we moved to an eight hour day and beds were removed from the fire houses. They created a fourth shift. The plan failed and was costly by the mid 1980s the department began to return to a traditional fire department.
In 1980 they operated 31 Pumpers, 9 Trucks, 6 Quints (three were single quints), 6 Midi pump Squads from 31 Fire Houses. Down Nine Pumpers, Six Trucks, twelve fie houses.
In 1993 three Quints were returned to dry trucks,
In 1997 two trucks, three Pumpers, and the six squads were coverted into seven rescues. They were nothing more then seven man power rigs. Four were designed as Service Truck Company's.
In 1997 we lost the oldest continually operated company Truck 1 est 1869 as McGee Hook and Ladder 1. 1999 we lost Pumper 2 est 1872 Dr. Lykins No. 2. Pumper 4 est 1877 is now the oldest continually operated company on the KCFD.
In 2005 the Three remaining 75ft Quints were disbanded. Stopping the quint madness. Pumper 44, Pumper 41, Pumper 28 were reopened.
In 2011 they operate 33 Pumpers, 12 Trucks, 3 Rescues, 1 Haz-Mat Pumper, 1 Haz-Mat Support from 34 Fire Houses. Still down six Pumpers, three Trucks, nine fire houses. The Rescues are actual rescues now.
There has never been a Pumper 46 or Fire House 46.
Currently KCFD is in great shape every pumper has four, trucks have four, rescues are six, haz-mat has eight, BC still have drivers. Things are good, I see them adding a couple trucks in the next few years.

Excellent information...What is the background on the 7 rescue concept and then abandoning it relatively quickly (9 years or so)?
Specific to the rescues, don't they have very heavy staffing? Like 7.
And any idea which rescue companies were used to re-organize other companies?

Rescue 1, 9 & 31 remains the 3 Rescues for the city.
Rescue 7 - became Pumper 28. When P28 was reorganized they were orginally issued a Reserve Pumper which had spent time at both Pumpers 10 & 25. Later P28 had a E\-One Typhoon Pumper with hydraulic ladders (first and last rig with hydraulic ladders for the KCFD) purchased for them. I think theres a pic that Rick had taken of it at the Fire Academy. It now belongs to the Fire Academy as Pumper 51. Most of the equipment Rescue 7 had on it remained on P28 (extrication & RIT equipment). P28 and P44 (ex Q44) were the only 2 Pumpers that were RIT capable, on top of all Truck & Rescue Co's. A couple years ago FH28 was remodeled at that time is when R7 was closed and turned into P28, Q28 was closed and turned into T15 out of 30s until the new 36s was built. P28 was placed at FH41 with Q41 until their house was completed. Both P28 & T15 benefited from the moves to their temporary houses. Those 2 companies caught a lot of fire that they normally would not have gotten. At this time Pumper 28 is also in charge of Brush 28.
Rescue 11 - I believe their manpower was distributed, nothing was reorganized with them.
Rescue 12 - went into Haz-Mat to add more manpower. I believe the guys rotate every other month for who rides Pumper 71 & who rides Support 71. In the early stages of FH27 opening (Car 110 (now C302, P71, Support 71 & Utility 71) when P71 had a run in their first due whether Fire (still alarm) or EMS related another Pumper normally P24 if in service would also make the alarm. I believe they did this due to the lack of manpower Haz-mat had at the early stages of FH27 reopening. So if they were on a alarm and a Haz-Mat alarm came in they could leave and the other Pumper would stick around and handle it. If I remember correctly Support 71 was cross staffed by P71 & Utility 71 when they first moved in to FH27. Utility 71 was a F450 with a Utility body, and then later a GMC (flat face, not sure cab style) with a Hackney body it ran CO checks and Natural Gas Odors Inside with most of the citys first due Pumpers back in the day. They still have Utility 71 (the GMC) that is loaded with Absorbent. In present time P71 is still apart of Haz-mat but its shown as a normal Pumper just like any other throughout the city. There is no more sending 2 Pumpers on a still alarm in their first due.
Rescue 16 - became Truck 4 out of FH3

' />.Yep totally forgot Rescue 16 was used to reorganize Truck 4. Rescue 16 moved to New FH3 from FH16. Rescue 16 was one of three set up like a City Service Ladder Truck.
When Truck 4 was disbanded in 1979 it was answering from Fire House 7. Truck 4 and Pumper 7 were both disbanded together. Government Block grant was used to relocate FH7 keeping the number alive.
Eric is correct half of Rescue 12 became full time staffing for Pumper 71. Haz-Mat when opened in 1990 had five or six assigned. Back then it was three person Pumpers city wide. The Support was a lime green Betten Roll-up beverage truck that was donated to the fire department to organize HM71, it has a FAO like Air 1. Now there are eight assigned at HM71.
Rescue 11 and half of 12 was split to add add staffing to Rescue 1,9,31.
Rescue 7 became Pumper 28.
KCFD has done a lot of swapping over the years. Most of engine rigs assigned to the pumpers in 1975 had been reassigned to other pumpers by 1979. In part due to the Seagrave Quints and nine 1976 Mack MB's and the 1979 Ford C-8000 E-Ones.

One of Three,Truck 1,7,9. First pre-piped heavy duty ladders purchased by KCFD and last canopy cabs. Also this was during the time period when KCFD lost their Q-Sirens on the new rigs. Fire House 19 added Q-Sirens at their own cost to Truck 7 and Pumper 19 and spruced up the drab city decals. This was not uncommon during this period. Normally the companies that added Q Sirens were the heavy fire companies or the brothers that were into the job!!!
It was fun sitting in the Fire Alarm Exchange and watching the Late Bob McKiddy say Car 106 Pumper 19 and Hook and Ladder 7 over the air. To him it was not a Truck it was a Hook and Ladder!!!! Classic!!!

Late Fire House 19 Westport WPA building 1939. With the famous Red and Green Globes on the front. The last real fire house in the KCFD a street side, store front fire house!!! A week before the house closed I stopped in for some lunch, photos, and slide the poles one last time. Took a ride out of the house on Truck 7 to eat some Gate's BBQ with the Brothers from the 19's. Now its a Coffee Company go figure!!

Cool story about the guys buying the Qs with their own money, as well as the decals to spruce the rigs up. That's just unheard of!!! Pride and dedication at its best! Those "KCMO Fire Department" decals from that time period were very lame, for sure.

Great info! KCFD is probably the closest Metro Department to me (other than Omaha) here in Lincoln; unfortunately I don't know a lot about them. I've met a couple of the Brother's from there and they are top-notch. One of these days I'll have to Buff down there, although locating Stations isn't that easy. Thanks for the great pics and history!

Much to our surprise our drivers requested a top mount pump. This Pumper will closely match our 2001 E\-One. However it is longer due to the top mount pump. The entire department was anti PUC design and wanted a traditional style fire engine. We were able to fight CAFS and compromised with a Class A foam system. I believe the class a foam system will be a great addition. We were just not sold on CAFS for our aggressive urban environment. We are finely returning after to Sold RED after using White over RED for the past thirty-three years. Our tradition of moving our 1968 Ward LaFrance Bell to each new front-line engine will continue. This will be the fourth pumper the bell has served on. We are also adding a Red MARS light to the grill. Yes it will have a REAL Q siren on the foot pedal!!! matching our other units. We visit Pierce next week for the pre-build conference. Our city struggled for years with finical issues which was reflected in our 1991,2001,2004 E-Ones. This is the nicest first truly custom pumper we have purchased since our beautiful 1983 Pierce Arrow.
