The Fire Departments in the Pittsburgh area have some very unique apparatus colors. Purple Engine 2 in North Apollo was (or is) a 1984 Pierce Dash with 1000 gpm-pump and 750 gallon-tank. John Schmidt photo

Theres a reason for the strange colors in the kiski valley (westmoreland and armstrong border)

Before westmoreland and armstrong 911 these handful of companys were dispatched as color. IE brown engine, purple engine, blue engine, brown truck. ect

Most of the companys painted their trucks the colors that were assigned, (all except pink and black)

These are the ones that painted their trucks that color.

Red - Vandergrift 2

Brown - Vandergrift 1

Blue - North Vandergrift

Green - Parks Twp

Purple - North Apollo

Orange - Alleghney Twp

Yellow - Oklahoma

Silver - Washington Twp (were white)

Grey - Markle

White - Hyde Park

Trucks not painted to their color

Pink - Apollo 2 and 3

Black - Gilpin Twp

ss- Specail services (vandergrift rescue and air)

And dispatch was referred to as "Rainbow Control"..........

Hey Felix, did the silver fire co. have a Ford C-series/Pierce engine? I took a 35mm pic of one at West Lebanon VFC in Indiana Co., last June. Besides being silver, it had a top-mount panel and a small turret gun on the front bumper. It was sitting outside the station, and had been stripped.

Warren,

I took a picture of the engine you are referring to at West Lebanon last summer. West Lebanon told me they purchased it used from the Pine Twp. Fire Dept. in Indiana County. Pine Twp also has a rescue in that silver color.

Scott, I sympathize; I've got several shoeboxes like that! Do you get any assistance from your feline friend?

"silver company" or washington twp vfc. Was my old department.

During their silver days they had a Ford C model/Pirch engine which was sold to west lebanon.

Sadly it ended up here, at pechins "Death of many great trucks" auction. I do not have great pictures as there was a stack of crap infront of it so if anyone else has a good picture please post it.

They also had a Ford c model Pierce telesquirt that was sold to a broker and no one has seen or heard of it since. Ill try to post pictures but i dont want to walk over tascman.

There were quite a few Rainbow control rigs at the "death auction"

A few were

Gilpen C model ford

Apollo C model ford

Washington twp C model ford

Oklahoma GMC

Hyde Park C model ford

Heres one of the telesquirt 1976 (not the Colored in flags on the grille) Ford/pierce

Ford C models were very poplular in the Rainbow control area.
