Minnesota Apparatus - Ladder 68 - 04-03-2011 Isn't this the 2nd re-incarnation of Engine 21 and hence the hand-me down rig? I ask because I though the original E21 and L02 were combined to create Q21. Then when Q21 was disbanded, and their quint rig sent to a 2nd version of L02, E21 was reorganized. Corrections welcome and thanks in advance. Minnesota Apparatus - Guest - 04-03-2011 Larry, that is correct. The Quint previously assigned as E-21 became L-2. The engine with shop # 71560 was originally assigned to E-8, then E-22, and finally went to E-21. When the company closed, the rig became Spare 28. The bigger question could be, are any of the other Quints still in their original units? I love trying to keep up with company closings and re-organizations....its bad during good financial times and almost impossible during the economic times when companies are closing on a weekly, or even daily, basis. I simply gave up on Detroit. So Engine 21, with the hand-me-down rig shown, is now closed again? As for companies with their original quint rigs, how about Quint 11 (71803), Quint 15 (71801) or Quint 27 (71805)? These may not be current anymore though as I am probably behind the curve on company closing and rig assignments. Corrections welcome. Minnesota Apparatus - Guest - 04-03-2011 E-21 is currently in the 1993 Ford, that once was assigned (Shop#71560). The Minneapolis apparatus assignments are a fluid topic, so take these next paragraphs with a grain of salt. Hopefully Steve will check my math. Q-15 was assigned Shop# 71801. As of last year, money was found to re-staff L-7. This may have changed, but L-7 was assigned 71801, and E-15 was assigned a unit out of the spare pool. I don't know if this is still staffed this way. Q-21 was assigned Shop 71802 and became L-2, when money was found to re open E-21. Q-11 was assigned Shop# 71803 and it most recently was occupied by L-5. Q-20 was assigned Shop# 71804 and Station 20 & 2 switched units a couple years ago when another bridge across the Mississippi became un-useable. The department wanted a second aerial in NE Minneapolis, so the Quint moved to 2's Q-27 was assigned Shop# 71805 and it may be assigned to Q-20, as I have a 2009 picture of E-27 in the pumper that previously was E-17 E-21, E-2 and E-20. For a while there were 2-Quints running out of Station 27. Now, due to the loss of personnel, R-1 and R-9 were closed as staffed companies. When needed R-1 (Tech Rescue) and R-9 (Hazmat) will dump their respective houses and run as one unit. There was/is talk of reopening L-9, however I don't think there is an aerial to put them in. The department ordered 3 pumpers from Rosenbauer and the thought is that once they are assigned, there will be a couple Quints available to run as Ladder Companies. As of the first of the year L-5 moved back to Station 17, from 27, so the department would not run the wheels of of L-11 (2004 Dash 95' MM). There is/was also talk of refurbing the quints, to run as straight ladder companies. In their current configuration, there is not enough space for the normal truck equipment. The City has no monay for anything, so this may not happen. But that leads to another question(s)... Rescue 1 is staffed by the companies in house which are? What about Rescue 9? I thought Ladder 9 was originally disbanded to provide the dedicated manpower for R9. If that is not the case any more, what is available to staff R9 when needed? Thanks in advance. Rescue 9 is currently running as a ladder company with 4 most of the time in there rescue truck until a ladder truck becomes available. and if needed my guess ladder 9 and Engine 11 will staff the mobile lab and Rescue 9. While the Quints were originally assigned as "Quint" 11, 15, 20, 21 and 27 they actually ran as Engine Companies and while lettered "Q-#" were always referred to as "Engine" companies. Engine 11's Quint became Spare Ladder 8 after a couple years (for a couple years) at Station 8. It was used extensively to fill-in for the other Quints as they each had major repairs done to their chassis. After a fire death in Station 27's first-due area, Ladder 5 was moved to Station 27 (where it barely got any runs). The MFD powers then decided to give Ladder 5's 2002 Pierce 100' TDA to much-busier Ladder 3, which was then operating with a 1997 Sutphen 104' MM. When the Lowry bridge connecting the north side to the east side was closed, Engine 20's Quint went to Station 2 as Engine 2 and Engine 2's Freightliner became Engine 20. The department found funds in 2008 to put Ladder 2 back in service at Station 21. Engine 21 got a reserve 1993 Ford L/General Safety engine to operate with and Ladder 2 got Engine 21's Quint. Spare Ladder 8 (old Quint 11) then became Ladder 5 after their Pierce went to Ladder 3, but it didn't make sense to have two Quints at Station 27, so Engine 27 and Engine 20 switched rigs (Engine 20 getting former Quint 27). Then when the Camden bridge over the Mississipi River was closed temporarily for six+ months in 2010, Federal Funds were made available to put a ladder truck back into service on the NE side. This was in addition to the Lowry bridge being closed, then condemned and torn down in 2008. Engine 15's Quint became Ladder 7 during this period in 2010 and Engine 15 was assigned Spare Engine 7, a 1993 Ford L/General Safety pumper. When the temporary closure of the Camden Bridge ended, Engine 15 got Quint 15 back as Engine 15 and Ladder 7 went out of service. Rescue 1 was taken out of service as a manned company on 1/1/2011 (Engine 6 & Ladder 11 will operate it if it is needed for a major rescue), which hasn't happened yet- that I am aware of. On 1/1/11 Rescue 9's responses were changed to that of a ladder truck. Rescue 9 is still the Haz Mat unit and it still responds city-wide to HazMat situations. Also on 1/1/11, Ladder 5 was moved back to Station 17, where it is much busier. The plan is for Rescue 9 to become Ladder 9 when a ladder truck becomes available. At least two of the three new engines will be used to replace engines operating with Quints (probably re-assigned hand-me-down engines) with one of the Quints going to Ladder 9 and the other becoming a much-needed spare ladder ruck. These two Quints will have some modifications done to their chassis so that they will have more ladder equipment than they now have operating as engine companies.
