It was intended as a cheap short-term fix. Why spend good money that is badly needed elsewhere in the department on restriping a cab? I'm sure the guys on Ladder 25 are just happy to have an enclosed cab to be honest.

Boston Fire Department - Guest - 02-22-2008

yea thats true but i thought they would have at least fixed the LADDER decal on the door because that looks like it came from weymouth but anyway i hear you on the quick fix because they had a spare for a long time so your right them guys probably were glad to have their truck back.

Yea but the spare fleet is terrible, so if you guys could get another like 7 trucks it would give you a decent spare fleet to work with. Then there are a lot of engines that at the time of the previous comment that i wasnt thinking of so yea you probably could go for about 10 pumps... (39,10,42,28,50,55....you get point

Couple of things.....why would the cab look bad on the truck? E\-One hasn't changed their body design, so it was just a matter of putting an older cab on it. This is Ladder 17, but was identical to Ladder 16, which is the rig the cab came off of. When Weymouth bought it from Boston, they added the enclosed cab.

As far as not removing the "Ladder" lettering, you have to realize that's an EXPENSIVE gold-leaf lettering job. It's not as simple as using 3M adhesive deactivator and a heat gun. That would have to be sanded, primed, color matched and decaled.....probably another $1000 to the cost. It's a quick fix that's much better than just leaving them in a spare, and, in a change for Boston, was a fiscally smart move.

In a perfect world, the apparatus would have been replaced long ago, but the capital improvements budget is limited (I believe $3M), and you replace what you can, where you can. When EMS takes over the FD, vehicles will be replaced on a much better schedule. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/feedtroll.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Feedtroll' />

Thought it was supposed to be the other way around? <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/stirpot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Stirpot' />

Of course now that you guys have bunker gear, CO Meters and God knows what else who can tell the difference anymore? <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

nice shots here..especially the ladder 7 pic

Boston Fire Department - yelrowekim - 02-22-2008

The lettering was stickers too when it was in Weymouth.... "Gold Leaf Stickers"

When you are self insured (like most cities in the commonwealth are) it is done on the cheap....unless the other peoples insurance is paying... If L 25 was hit by some one else and they were at fault...I bet it would have a new cab.... If you notice in the photo I posted of it down greenwood... you can see Quincy L 5 in the background... that had a "close encounter" with a security gate at state street.( the type like at the U N, Airports...) Lifted the hole truck up in the air.... The guard in the shack "let the button go"... State Street is paying for the truck to be fixed... If the city was paying it would still be sitting down the ship yard....

<img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/stirpot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Stirpot' /> The other thing I just thought of was.... any one who has the Code 3 model... You all have to replace your cab if you want it to be authentic..... And if you have L 23 you have to bend the right side of the bumper up too.....

BEMS does not have bunker gear...

They have EMS/USAR gear... "Tri Duty"... Very nice spec too...

Yes, those are very nice. If you look at the pics from the cambridge third the other night, you'll see that I'm taking full advantage of them.

The way I understand it, the only difference between the structural firefighting turnout gear and the USAR spec is the second layer of Nomex. It needs one layer to be USAR compliant....think about some of the areas the USAR teams go into after things like earthquakes.

Boston Fire Department - yelrowekim - 02-23-2008

It doesn't have a thermal liner... you have flash protection..

You have the outer shell and the moisture barrier but no thermal liner...

ya i guess code 3 will have to make the old style hurricane cab....and sell it as a kitbash lol...or maybe itll be one of their new "re-toolings" <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/stirpot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Stirpot' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/stirpot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Stirpot' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/stirpot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Stirpot' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/stirpot.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Stirpot' />

We've got a spare 2003 GMC/Braun in the station that I think the department forgot about.....you could run it as a wagon.........at least it's got heat in the back. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />
