ESU changing a tire in traffic. Now that's service!

A very large tow truck. These guys were staged every place to remove broken down vehicles to keep traffic flowing.

After seeing these around for a few days, I finally went up to one and talked to them. After producing my PD identification, they explained that they take pictures of plates and sample the air in certain areas for problems. They showed me the system, very high tech for sure. Much better than what we got in the northwoods of Wisconsin!!

Hanging out in Times Square. I talked to these guys. They were rotated in from the Bronx. Every so often radio cars get rotated into the "tourist areas" for the sole purpose of visibility and intimidation.

Hello All,

The other day when the NYPD had the barricaded subject in the 6-3 Pct in Brooklyn , I saw that ESU has a new large armored truck. This looks like it started life as a Brinks or Wells Fargo truck.

Question is when did they get this and what happened to the two Lenco Bear Cub units? And where is this monster kept?

Thanks for any and all information.

Happy 4th of July!

I saw the same on news coverage. I believe it's been around for a while. Do a google search for NYPD armored trucks and several pics of it should show up.

My bet is that it's based at Floyd Bennett with the rest of the specialized ESU rigs, and considering the proximity of the 63 precinct to Floyd Bennett, they decided to bring it out. I've also seen it in Times Square during high vis events.

The Lenco Bear Cubs are still around.I saw one up at the 50 Pct (W238 ST & Broadway) this week.

Thanks for the replies! Did some digging and this is what I found out. The rig is built on an International chassis built by a company called Alpine and is based on their BULLDOG model.

Any further info or corrections welcome!!!
