Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 I was able to get some old photos of Castlewood Fire apparatus from our PIO - Castlewood is one of the departments that came before the name South Metro Fire. First up... Rescue 1 & Engine 1 (a 1972 Mack) leaving the old quarters on Dayton Street north of Arapahoe Road. Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 1969 GMC / Howe, later sold to the Franktown Fire District Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Castlewood's first aerial, a 1976 Seagrave / LTI 85' aerial ladder with a 350 gallon water tank Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 An updated photo of Tower 32 with the "newer" Castlewood graphics, red cab and strobe lights on the rear. Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 A very cool photo of Tower 32 on the pad at night. I believe this photo was taken by Retired Engineer Gary Haines Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 1976 FWD / McDonald nicked named "Fud" short for Elmer Fud by the firefighters Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Engine 32 with their new 1978 Pierce / Duplex, I think this may have been a Pierce photo Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 The Castlewood fleet in the late 1970's. From left... Ford Battalion Chief pickup, 1978 Dodge / Pierce mini pumper, Ford ambulance, 1972 Mack, 1967 FWD, 3 1978 Pierce / Duplex pumpers, 1976 Seagrave / LTI & 1976 Chevrolet / Saulsbury Squad A close up of the newer rigs in the fleet Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 The Cherry Hills Fire Protection District merged with Castlewood in the 1980's, this was Squrt 1, a 1979 Hendrickson / Pierce. It was later sold to the Roxborough Volunteer Fire Department Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Castlewood Battalion 3 running a 1980's Suburban Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Engine 34 running a 1986 Boardman, this station was replaced by a larger firehouse on the same site. Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 One of my favorites as a kid, Heavy Rescue 32. This is a 1984 Chevy / General which began service as an Engine Co. with Cherry Hills Village. It became the first Heavy Rescue Squad in the south Denver area. In the 80's & 90's four departments came together to share a training center & special call apparatus. They named the group "South Metro" which was completely unrelated to Castlewood changing their name to South Metro in the year 2000. The balloon looking graphics represented the four fire departments in the group. Red for Bancroft (now West Metro), Green for Englewood, Blue for Castlewood and Yellow for Littleton. This unit was sold in 1999 to the Jackson 105 Fire District and is now in service as Engine 141. Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Another very tough looking rig was Engine 36, a 1984 Chevrolet / KME 4x4. At the time the Castle Pines & Surry Ridge area was very rural and needed a good off road engine. A crew of 3 staffed this engine, a medic and water tender for many years. This Engine is now in service as West Douglas County Engine 133 Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Engine 36 was replaced with this 1994 Pierce Dash, a twin to this Engine ran as Engine 34 until the new Fire Station 39 opened in 1997. The engine is picutred brand new with no numbers. Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 This was a bad day. Red Leader 35, a 1970 International / Teague operated as the only ARFF unit at Centennial Airport until 1999. At an airshow in the mid 90's the crew had a very close encounter with a prop plane. Everyone was okay and the rig was restored back to good condition quickly. Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Red Leader 35 in 2000 with upgraded South Metro graphics (and a newer light bar) just prior to being retired. Denver Metro Fire Apparatus - Guest - 11-18-2012 Last one... The fleet of newer Louvires Fire Protection District apparatus just prior to being merged into South Metro. From left Tender 122, Engine 122, Engine 121, Engine 123 & Squad 123 on the pad at Station 123. This building is now South Metro Station 40 and only the water tender remains in service. |
