Whats the story behind the closing of Station #167? Did El Monte decide to reduce an Engine Co. in the city for cost savings?
And does this leaves 90's, 166's, 168's and 169's in El Monte totalling 3 Engine Co.'s and 1 Quint Co.?

Larry,
Basically, it was money issues. It leaves E's 168 & 169, Quint 166 & the Squad @ 166s. Btw, Engine 90 is in the City of S. El Monte.
El Monte wanted to close 167, because it is cash strapped. The County tried to work with them, but the city won out.

I figured it had to do with money. So what becomes of the personnel? Are they just reassigned to other LACoFD stations?

While the medic's on squad 167 transferd over to 166s with the Squad the engine personeel were able to to bid out and be reassigned to new stations.

No one has ever explained the LA Co model to me. Even though it is a county department is every city still responsible to fund their fire houses and the equipment assigned? I always assumed that each taxpayer funds LA Co thru their mill levy. Thanks in advance, Rick
My Example: I live in a City in Kansas that uses a Fire District for fire protection. As a homeowner I pay nine taxing mills for fire protection to the county who in-turn gives the money to Consolidated Fire District Two. The City provides all other services except fire protection.

El Monte is a contract city they orginally had there own fire department then they went thru a financial crunch and voted to disband there fire department and contract with LACoFD where as some cities have never had there own fire department's and have always relied on LACoFD to provide fire & ems service. None of the cities that contract with LACoFD are responsible for maintaining the apparatus or stations that is handeled thru LACoFD. LA County FD is there own special tax district which recieves revenue from property taxes as well as the fee for service cities such as Pomona and El Monte. Pomona's City Council in the early 2000's did vote to close Engine 181 which is paired with Quint 181 to form Light Force 181 due to the Engine's closing the light force was disbanded and the Quint ran solo until the city council voted to reinstate Engine 181. LACoFD worked with the City of El Monte to prevent the closure of Station 167 reworking the financial numbers but in the end the city found it cheaper to reduce the amount of services they were paying the County to man.
Some fee for service city's are Azusa, Lynwood, El Monte, Hawthorne, La Habra, Pomona, Glendora, Covina,

LACoFD and LASD (Sheriff's) have served Contract Cities since the 1950's. Lakewood, just north of Long Beach, was the first such contract (Stn. 45). The contract-for-service arrangement has long been called the "Lakewood Plan".
