Its one of 3 area bridges into Canada's Ontario Province. This particular one spans the Niagara right at the mouth of Lake Erie. Last year we made it there on Saturday of the convention during sunset, lucky to find somebody leaving so we didn't have to park a mile away. BTW it is only like 10 weeks until it's time for the convention in Wildwood. Until a few years ago we never had them, now in the winter on my 1/4 mile residential street there could be several hundred. One really cold morning I had 40 on my rooftop alone. They are also protected by federal law. The coast has been taking a beating the last two days from a storm off the coast, not as bad as down in Virginia. That is sand blown up on the boardwalk, it appears as if you will need to ride the cable cars to get over it!
Sure is hard to believe that today, July 4, 2010, there are probably 80,000 people on the Boardwalk and beach at Seaside Heights. Ringwood State Park consists of 3 separate areas: Ringwood Manor, Skylands Manor, and Sheperd Lake. This is Ringwood Manor. Ringwood Manor was one of George Washington's HQs during the Revolutionary War. Ringwood was a major iron mining area and iron from Ringwood mines was used for the chain drawn across the Hudson River just south of West Point, NY. Over the years Ringwood Manor was home to Robert Erskine, Martin Ryerson, Peter Cooper, and Abram Hewitt, all prominent names in Revolutionary, as well as Ringwood, history. Here is the Manor
Very nice series Joe. I know that I'm commenting almost 9 months after you posted and at first thought I might have already but after checking can't find anything. Believe it or not I've only been to Ringwood Manor House once about ten years ago, despite the fact that one of my great-grandfathers was a foreman at the house for Mr Hewitt back in the late 19th century with my grandmother born in a house that was across from the school on what became reservoir property. Anyway getting back to fire, about 30 years ago one day I was out for a little spin at about noon on a Saturday going past the entrance when I heard the unmistakable sound of a Gamewell diaphone air honr blowing twice. I asked my friends in the Ringwood companies and PD but nobody knew what it could be. When the family went through the house I noticed two Gamewell horns atop the back part of the roof of the main house. A park ranger told me that in years past before cellphones, pagers and even hand held radios the horns had been used for a number of reasons such as calling the park staff in the event of a fire or emergency on the grounds with box signals for various sections of the park. Skylands Manor was a private residence for many years. It then became a campus of Shelton College until it was sold to the state of NJ in 1966. In 1984 it was designated as the state botanical gardens. Several modern additions have been made to the manor house to allow catered events such as weddings and formal dinners to be held there. Unfortunately, between the trees and the size of the house I've never been able to get a satisfactory picture of the manor house. This is the main entrance to Skylands Manor.
Again very nice. If the pics look familiar to Firepixers who've never been to this place, you might have viewed it on either the big screen or the relatively little screen as scenes for motion pictures, television shows such as The Soprano's and a reality show about the catering service who has the contract for the banquets held here.
