The next stop of the trip was Asheville FD Station #10 to shoot the big MCI bus. Once again, the crews were willing to move trucks around, so I shot everything in the building. Some were re-shoots, but all turned out better than the previous ones!

This is not a P-15, it's the "civilian" version, called the M-6000. The designation was originally the M-23, but changed to M-6000 in the mid-1980's. There were four M-23/M-6000 rigs built for non-Air Force airports:



1978 Memphis, TN (Hot Wheels made a replica of this one)

1980 Kuwait International Airport

1983 Anchorage, AK

1987 U.S. Army, Fort Hood, TX

Station 10 was formerly a two company house, housing Engine 10 and Ladder 10. They recently took Engine 10 out of service and dispersed those firefighters to other companies. The Ladder 10 company became Quint 10, handling the responses of ladder and engine for 10's area.

I have two sets of records on where this one formerly served. My records from somewhere show that it formerly served Briarcliff Manor, NY and Archville, NY.



Their memories of the truck is that it served Scarboro, NY. The engine was formerly all white, with "SCARBORO" across the front of the cab. The chief of Midtown VFD's last name was Scarborough and he didn't want the fire truck running around with his last name (albeit spelled differently) on the front of it. So they painted a red stripe through the middle of the cab to block out SCARBORO.

Scarborough is the name of the Fire Distirct that is protected by the Archville Fire Company - whom once owned the rig in question. Scarborough is a train station on the Hudson line of the o-north rail system and a hamlet in the Town of Ossining and Briarcliff Manor NY both in Westchester County. At one point until the early 1970's the Archville Fire Department and the Scarborough Engine Company, (part of the Briarcliff Fire Department) were one company until a state law said the agreeement was not legal. The Scarborough Engine Company in Briarcliff is a about a mile away - if that - from the Archville Fire House.... New York and its boundries and districts make life pretty interesting. Just to really confuse things - said Scarborough Fire District part of the town of Mount Pleasant NY....

The last stop of the day was Asheville Airport to get their new ARFF rig. Once again, I ran into friendly people and a big sunny parking lot. I shot the whole fleet, except for a reserve ARFF rig that's kept in the maintenance shed somewhere else in the airport.

And lastly is this rig. I was at home on Saturday when my boss sends me a text message that says "FDNY rescue truck westbound on I-40 passing the 24 mile marker" I sprang into action and was in hot pursuit. It took me a few minutes, but I finally caught up to the truck at the westbound rest area on I-40. Much to my surprise, it wasn't an FDNY rescue truck at all...but it was a truck that I'd been wanting to shoot for quite some time. This truck formerly ran with Woodruff, SC in Spartanburg County as "Rescue 1." I'd drove all the way to Woodruff last time I was in SC to shoot this rig, only to find the station locked up and nobody in sight. I talked to the driver of the truck, who was gracious enough to let me shoot the truck, and crawl all over and in it looking for specs.



The truck will now be used by Sky View Construction & Engineering Inc. in Labadie, MO. Their primary job is cell phone tower construction and repairs following disasters. The driver said this made the 4th used rescue truck that his company had purchased so far this year. After working side-by-side with firefighters during the Joplin, MO disaster, they saw how useful the rescue trucks were. He and his company decided to pursue used rescue trucks to use in their line of work. One of their other rescue trucks came from somewhere in SC. He thought it was Camdenton maybe? The other two used rescue trucks Sky View purchased out of either Illinois or Missiouri.



All in all, it was a neat find, and I'm so grateful that I got the chance to shoot this truck before it disappeared to Missouri!



This truck itself has an interesting history...



The cab & chassis came from a 1983 Ford C/ALF Commodore pumper that formerly served Inman Mills, SC.



The E\-One rescue body formerly sat on a 1988 Ford F-800 and formerly served an unknown department in Massachusetts.



In 2010, Woodruff arranged the kitbash/refurb of the two rigs into a 1983 Ford C/1988 E\-One heavy rescue. All lights were replaced with LED lights and an LED Roto-Ray was added.

Should have made the company an offer on the roto ray off the rescue. I'm surprised the department left all the LED lights and the roto ray on it when they sold it.
