Generally NYPD units have a white plate on it with the car number. Why does this marked unit have an official tag?[/quote]

It's for stealth. In your rearview mirror, it makes the car look like an ordinary sedan. That way, they can tail you and you don't know who's behind you until they hit the lights.

Sources report that the new Pierce will be assigned to ESU and it is unknown if it will go to one of the Trucks or be based at Floyd Bennett Field.

I thought that the NYPD wasnt interested in getting the Impala anymore?

NYPD - Guest - 07-15-2006

I heard the same about the Impala. My sources in Fleet Services were saying that the 2005 and earlier models were not holding up well, and were difficult to work on. Apparantly someone upstairs likes them, since they are slightly cheaper to buy and get better mileage than the Crown Vics. I also get the feeling that they do no want to p[ut all they 'eggs' in one basket with Ford (RMPS/vans/and REP trucks)

I have seen this reasoning in several other local agencies here.

Before they were cancelled, NYPD and other cities ordered their Caprices with the optional 4.3l V8 for the same reasons. Hard to justify an LT1 for downtown patrol.

Here are some shots of the NYPD from my visit last week.
