The Newton County, GA Fire Department can trace it's roots back to the early 1960's, when it consisted of numerous separate volunteer departments scattered throughout the County, including the small cities of Mansfield, Oxford and Porterdale.  Others, such as East Newton, North Newton, Central Newton, Salem Road, and Rocky Plains, provided protection for all parts of the County outside the city limits of Covington, which has had a career department for many years.  Back in the 1990's, the County began to purchase apparatus and staff a couple stations.  Today, there are ten staffed stations, only one of which was a former VFD station.
I began photographing apparatus in Newton County back in the late 1980's, while everything was still all volunteer.  Finding someone to pull the apparatus outside for photos was only by chance.  There were several stations where I never found anyone.  Many of the older VFD apparatus are long gone, but a handful still exist in reserve status.  Yesterday, I found one I had never before seen.  It came from the East Newton VFD.

Yesterday I visited Columbus, GA for the first time in at least ten years to update my photo collection of their apparatus.  The CFD operates 14 engines, 6 ladders, 2 squads, and a decon unit from 14 stations.  There are four 2001 Pierce Saber pumpers on the roster, but every other apparatus was built by E\-One.  The front line pumpers are either Cyclone II or Typhoon models, with one lone Quest that was an emergency purchase of a demo unit due to the loss of a Pierce Saber when the station burned.  Aerial units include a 100' platform quint, two 100' quints, two 78' quints, all on Cyclone II chassis, and one Typhoon 75' quint.
