This one and Gaithersburg's 72 Young Bison (another I'd like to find) were 2 of my favorite rigs to see when Ilived in G'burg back in the 80's.

The information I have on this unit from Gaithersburg was a 1976 Pierce 1250 gpm/500 gwt (no serial number available) on a 1975 Duplex R-300 chassis, Duplex serial number 13731. Hope that this helps out.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... it is amazing how quickly the appearance of LAFD (and other S. Cal apparatus) goes south once it is no longer in front-line or reserve status. I am assuming that this Seagrave TDA was recently surplused and is ready to be auctioned off.

This 1957 Chevy is still the property of it's original owner, the Village of Yorkville Fire Department. It is a very unique piece. Unfortunately is it parked in a city garage across the street from the fire station in Yorkville, Ohio. It's tires are flat and the paint is fading. It is a Chevy panel van with a 500GPM (or possibly 250GPM) front mount pump. It has a 100 gal. booster tank behind the driver seat. If you notice behind the drivers door, there is a hole with hose rollers where the booster line pokes through. There is a Santa Rosa nozzle holding the hose in place in the hole. I believe it was built by Sutphen. As far as I know, there are only two other rigs like this to have been built. One went to Piedmont, Ohio and the other to Wolfhurst, (Blaine) Ohio. The Wolfhurst rig did not have the booster tank and reel. The color schemes on all three rigs are the same. I had heard that this rig had been used as an ambulance at one point, but I don't think that is correct. The interior appears to be set up for equipment rather than for comfort. Any input welcome... I forgot that I had these...in 2006 I found a couple of relics serving out their days on separate pumpkin farms around New Paltz, NY. Up first is an International/Howe marked for Fultonville Fire Department (I'm assuming Fultonville, NY?). It was serving as transport for apple pickers, going up and down a hill all day long. I thought I had written the info down somwhere, but who knows where it is by now. The photos are not great quality, and of course the ID plate came out fuzzy. I wasn't planning on taking pictures and time was of the essence, so maybe next time....

Next was this early '40's (?) Ford/ALF (model FOR-DCC reg. No. F-1487). This was at a separate farm and the markings underneath were difficult to tell (again, I probably wrote some of this down somewhere). This one was stationary, probably for some time. Hopefully someone has some info on this.

Scott, yes that is correct on the location. I believe it is scheduled to be auctioned off this coming weekend. No idea what it will go for, or what some of the others that were auctioned off recently went for.

A couple of the main issues are quick oxidation of red paint, constant sun, and not being covered. Many of these TDAs were used for training at their academy. My best guess is that this truck has been sitting in the sun for 4 to 5 years, which means the fading of the paint was not immediate. Needless to say, once they go to training, or kept for parts, they are not cared for because they know they are not going to be used for any frontline or reserve status. Very rarely do they go straight from being in a station or covered area, to the auction block.



This just doesn't go for SoCal fire apparatus. Ask anyone who owns a red car in SoCal, and they will tell you it is a constant battle to keep it looking good in the sun out there.

Atlanta has the same situation except it also occurs in our reserve fleet. There have been attempts to house the reserve equipment in open bays in firehouses. Most of the time reserve equipment is in service anymore. Things have improved over the past couple of years as far as the fading issue. People just don't take care of equipment that is not their regular apparatus. (and sometimes - not even their regular apparatus.)

Most of the depts at least last that I knew of in SoCal tried the same thing if space allowed. Or at least the station where the piece was housed as a reserve was expected the keep it looking good. But once they are in the training fleet or awaiting disposition, anything goes.

I believe this Ford/ALF served a few years as Ladder 93 in Old Forge, Pa. in the late 80's was replaced by a FDNY Scope

1942 Ford American LaFrance 500/150. F-1487 Delivered to the US Army April 9 1942. One of 40 Class 500 pumpers delivered in that order of fire trucks

Check out the recent postings on the Virginia apparatus thread - I have photos and information on the Mack and others have posted pictures of the Mack prior to going to Pennington Gap.
