I agree. Thanks for the info Sr. The temporary house they're running out of now looks more like a tent than a firehouse. I think moving Truck 10 to 28's house at night is a good call. I drove by the 10 house many a night (before moving it to 28) and saw the rig sitting outside on the ramp, and in that part of town who knows what could happen to it!

Do we have any idea of a delivery date on the Quantum Foam Rig, 3 Engines, or 2 Trucks? Also, any confirmed assignments other than 26.

Tim: I have no clue where the current Foam 426 will end up. Foam 437 was bought as an industrial foam pumper to protect the Newington Tank Facility. Foam 426 was bought with DOT funds for the infamous Mixing Bowl. I have no idea if there are plans to keep it as a reserve or move it to the west end but me thinks that MWAA has lots of nice new ARFF vehicles for Dulles.
Shoop: I don't have any details on the status of the deliveries; assignments etc. I will have to make nice-nice and see what information I can get from my trusted sources. So long as I don't have to be on one of those obscenely sized Impel pumpers we are now buying for my last 30 months on the job.
Nate: For those of us with a long enough memory, there was an 85' LTI Tower assigned to FS28 up until 1988 or 89. That truck company was relocated to the west end at Frying Pan to provide increased truck coverage out there and the vehicle itself I believe had a four door conversion after it was surplussed from the County of Fairfax and was serving in Nebraska somewhere. There may have also been a geopolitical reason for doing so <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_redface.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='
' /> I won't elaborate on that one for fear of misconscruing the facts! As for "anything can happen" in that area is an understatement: As I recall T410 was doing physical training at a local gym and had assorted tools (chain saws, gasoline-powered rotary saws) stolen in broad daylight on more than one occasion.

There are some blueprints on the wall somewhere at 26 of a possible new unit. Appears that fairfax may me using a play out of Howard Co, MD's playbook. They just got a "street legal" ARFF vehicle. Looks like a tanker, but can hold its own for ARFF functions. Pics are on this site somewhere. Ought to be interesting. Type in street legal arff on the search tab, that should get you to the Howard county thread.

Sr - That's interesting to learn about 28 and the rig going out to 36's area. The only ladder I knew about being at 28 was this gem, which I believe was from the early 80's?

If you look at my photo page on the forum, I posted shots of both of the Tankers from Howard County. Your most likely correct in them needing some street legal, and easier to maneuver.

It was never assigned as Tower 30. Truck 30 was operating a sweet open-cabbed Seagrave tractor drawn when I was hired which I think had been Truck 13 and/or Truck 18 in its previous employment with the County of. Truck 30 received one of the first E\-One 110' single axle rear-mounts in the late 80s before they were assigned a 1991(?) E\-One Hush 95' tower ladder w/an Anaheim cab.
Also, there are slew of new medic units in and they are being assigned to the field this week. I know M426 and M428 are in-service and M428 should go in-service later today. They are Freightliners w/Horton body work. Since they carry firefighters and fire-medics w/full turnout gear and SCBA, I will try to get a pic of it up today.

The Quantum PUC foam unit for FS26 will be 1500 gpm, 2500 gallon water tank, 500 gallons of foam concentrate and 500 lb Purple K on a tandem rear axle and the unit will be able to pump and roll. The current Foam 426 is being replaced due to ongoing mechanical issues and the efforts required to maintain exemptions for it to use Virginia roadways.

As for the other apparatus in the Pierceline, oops, pipeline: two new engines based on existing specs one of which might end up at the Fire Academy. The argument for putting one if not both at the firefighter factory is to have apparatus that the recruits can learn on and from with similar configurations to what they will experience in the real world of Operations. As most followers in this forum know, one of the Dash pumpers from the previous order that was originally assigned to the Fire Academy after delivery was reassigned to Engine 401 to replace McLean VFD's hard-worked 1997 Pierce Lance that ran many years as Engine 401 (a few of those with me in the right front seat). There is one tower ladder on order headed out to the west end at Fire Station 36. Delivery of this order is expect in early 2011.

This has probably been covered in this thread somewhere, but how does a "volunteer" department such as McLean raise funds or pay for apparatus? Other than having the "in partnership" writing and logo patch (and keeping your department colors) what exactly is the advantage of the vollie house buying thier own piece??? I am sure it has been covered at least once but I am drawing a blank and don't recall how or why it works.

MaximSnorkel: This will be the first county-owned Quantum. Personally, I think the Quantum is butt ugly and would settle for an IMPEL just on looks alone. One of the reasons the FRD is going w/the Impel for other apparatus (engines, ladders/towers, rescues) is due to the fact the county's Department of Vehicle Services (DVS) (i.e., the vehicle repair shop) demands to have Detroit Diesel since that is what most of the mechanics work on besides whatever is in the nation's largest (I think FXCO still holds the record) school bus fleet and the Department of Solid Waste has been buying Macks for the last few years (they get whatever they want cause of the huge revenues generated for tipping at the transfer station next to the Fire Academy) so I think that's how the Mack chassis slid in for the tankers (water tenders, whatever you wanna call them). Technically, the DVS folks own the fire trucks and just lets us use them!
Rheems1: I personally don't know of any advantages to having a volunteer owned rig versus a county rig. The Apparatus Division eventually has to approve the specs in order for the rig to be purchased and their is a boiler plate spec that outlines basics for volunteer purchased equipment. Many of the volunteer companies are approaching the point where they can't raise sufficient funds to pay for new rigs despite fund drive letters, bingo one or two nights per week and hall rentals. In "my" perfect world, they would all be county-owned rigs and if there were volunteers who wanted to and were certified to ride, they could ride as auxiliary firefighters. After all, we have auxiliary police officers in the police department but they don't have police cars that say "Mason District Auxiliary Police Department".....
