Montgomery, MD Truck # 6 was this 1979 Ford L/1960 American LaFrance 100' ladder truck. Mattson Collection

Wasn't this truck auctioned off at Pechins in Denbo Pa not too long ago. Also didn't it have a purple k setup on the trailer.

Not sure about the purple k.. But to add to what you wrote, it was built from a 1979 Ford L DOT dump truck, It had a tandum axle of which one was removed and the springs were welded right to the frame. This made for a very rough ride. The trailer came from a 1960 American LaFrance 100' as you said, from Silver Spring truck 1, and the ladder came from an American LaFrance 100' straight truck, Silver Spring truck 16. The truck as a whole was called the "lead sled".

Yes it was auctioned off at the Denbo Auction and it did have the Purple K setup on it then.

Merry Christmas

Do you happen to remember the year of Silver Spring Truck 16 and was it the ALF Ladder Chief they had? Thanks!

Micah and Marshall, I don't think the 1954 ALF 700 (7-85-AEO; #9357) which had a 85' aerial was used for that project, see attached article.(Wagon Pipe newsletter, Winter 1983-84)

The truck was redone in 1983-84, it lasted until sometime in summer 1992.It was used at most of the truck cos. in Montgomery, the photo at Sta. 8 was taken almost 25 years ago.

Silver Spring's 1973 ALF 1000 series originally served Alexandria, VA., was sold to SSVFD about 1981, served as Truck 1 thru much of the 1980's, then was sold to Oxford, MD. where it lasted until just a couple years ago.

Another photo of the converted Ford/ALF ladder, this is after retirement and sitting along RT 124 at the Gaithersburg Airpark.I'm fairly certain this was donated to Aspers,PA., but don't believe it actually saw service.

Note the different front bumper and grille in this shot as compared to the previous 2 photos. Around 1990, the rig was involved in some type of head-on accident, but the details are lost to me...

Aspers did own one of the Ford/ALF's. They played with it for a year or so and then got rid of it. It never fit in the station.
