Maybe this will help. One way to remember, is that the union always flies forward. Look at some of the military uniforms with the flag on the right shoulder. The union is always flying forward. You always march forward and never retreat.

Something that I have often wondered about with CFD apparatus numbering.......

is there any thought or reasoning behind the special units being called the three digit number series(i.e. 6-5-3 etc)?

I believe it goes back to the telegraph days of dispatching, and CFD never saw the need to change its numbering. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Thumbsup' />

Thank you for sharing and look forward to seeing more. Mack sure knew how to make some killer/functional rigs. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yourock.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Yourock' />

Hmmm, 2-7-9, that's a new one. Does it have its own district or is it a spare?

From what I've been told its stationed at O'Hare Airport and runs as the command van for the Airport but I've never heard them on the radio...

I was under the impression that 2-7-8 handled both O'Hare and Midway calls, but I too have never heard 2-7-9 on the radio or during the 0900 radio tests.

Chicago Fire Department - karl4700 - 12-24-2009

2-7-8 is at the O'hare Airport, and its bright slime yellow. 2-7-9 is used in the city for major incidents and special events as is house at the 39th Street garage.
