Paul, for lack of a better explanation, it refers to the basic subdivision or general area of the county where the station is actually located. As an example, there may be stations located in the "mailing area" of Falls Church, but they are actually in areas known to the residents such as Seven Corners, Jefferson, etc. The DCFD also does this on their apparatus as well.

My main interest is where the name Frying Pan originated. Does the area look like one from the air??

Paul,

Here is the answer !!!

"Legend has it that the name Frying Pan came about when a later settler found a frying pan on the bank of the stream, an item apparently left by a miner many years before."

A mini-lesson on the box system.

Typically, the first-due station is the first one or two digits of the box number

Any box ending in "00" is the box where that particular fire station is located; i.e. box 2800 is where FS28 is located.

Any box ending in "90 something" is located in Fairfax County but a mutual aid company may be closer, i.e., Box 191 has units from 106 (Falls Church) closer than from FS01.

Any box beginning with a 4 is located within an incorporated city or town within Fairfax County: 4400's are in Herndon, 4300's and 4500's are in Fairfax City, 4200's in Vienna, 4600's are in the City of Falls Church (and Arlington County also dispatches calls with the city proper as 46something). The Town of Clifton is the exception to this rule

Any box with "50" something is on a limited access highway (Beltway, 66, Toll Road, Connector Road, GW Parkway and "the 95")

Any box with "60" something is on an off or on-ramp to a limited access highway.

A few box tweeks are happening to address other situations. 22 (Springfield) has an odd box number that escapes me now for the METRO/VRE station. 25 and 4 are sharing a box right on the line between their first-dues.

PM me if you need more.

Great post and great photos. I grew up in what was when I loved Box 3503, it was at one point a 14 box then a 22 box, 2705 and then 3503. If anyone is out 35 way could you get a photo of the medical support mass casualty truck they reportedly have. Also a photo of the inside of the TRSU and either of the cav-in tech rescue units would be nice to see.

I remember when 35 opened one of the guys at 35 telling us they were awaiting a ladder truck more than once (never happened I see). They park a reserve in their for a few years.

Anyway for those who remember Quint 14 its still alive and running well. I photographed it on a working house fire the other day........
