They are step rings... you can get a footing in them.

Keep in mind this is a NYPL (New York Public Library) facility. You don't need to be a member to visit it. It's at the academy on Randall's Island. Just show photo id at the gate and tell the guard your destination is the library. There is a huge Code 3 collection on display (Code 3 sends over copies of every FDNY rig they make.)

Phil, are you sure about it being part of the NYPL system? It was my belief it is a FDNY facility.

Guaranteed! Twas told to me by one of the 'librarians' whom I see occasionally at various functions. I've been there several time with out of town visitors and am never questioned or stopped at the gate. The only question is "Where can we park?"

Does anyone know if these are an exclusive to Ferrara or can they be obtained from other manufacturers?

It is an off the shelf product... mostly seen on beverage delivery trucks, I'm sure that you could spec them out on your apparatus.
